Biography
Born and raised in Syracuse, New York, US, Sexton found a love for music from an early age, teaching himself guitar and playing in several bands. Moving away from the world of rock & roll, he developed his unique folk style, complimented by his soulful vocals reminiscent of Otis Redding and Al Green. In 1988, Sexton moved to Boston, US, becoming a popular performer of the city’s burgeoning coffeehouse folk scene.
In 1991, he released “In The Journey,” his debut record, an autobiographical account of his life on the road. The cassette-only release sold an incredible 15,000 copies, suggesting his work as a tireless performer had paid off. In 1994, the National Academy of Songwriters recognised his talent, awarding him with their ‘Artist of the Year’ award. His second album, “Black Sheep” followed in a similar vein to his first record and was released on Eastern Front Records in 1996.
Now an established artist, Sexton began sharing the stage with his heroes, such as Art Garfunkel, Jackson Browne and John Hiatt. Signing with major label Atlantic Records, his third album, “The American,” appeared in 1998, followed by “Wonder Bar” in 2000. Sexton found the festive spirit in 2005, with his Christmas-themed “Camp Holiday,” whilst continuing to tour extensively.
2007’s “Seeds” brought Sexton his biggest commercial success of his career, with the record debuting at number six on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Another accolade found its way into Sexton’s hands in 2009, receiving the award for “Best Live Performance Album” at the annual Independent Music Awards. “Sugarcoating” then arrived in 2010, before Sexton focused on his political convictions with 2012’s five-track EP, “Fall Like Rain.”
Live reviews
This was a special night for my family as we were able to finally get my brother-in-law to attend. Seeing Martin live is a completely different experience than listening to his CDs. His use of his voice is masterful and amazing.
My brother-in-law was looking forward to hearing Glory Bound and Freedom of the Road and he wasn't disappointed. I was very happy to hear him singing along. The four song medley in the middle of the show was INCREDIBLE, especially his cover of Dear Prudence.
We try not to miss a Martin Sexton show and this show is our reason - his voice is fantastic. He obviously loves the crowd. We love you too Martin! Come back to Atlanta again soon!
That was one of the BEST concerts I have ever seen. Martin Sexton is so incredibly talented and inspiring. I have never heard such silence from a crowd, just waiting to hear his next note. Thank you Songkick for keeping me in the loop. Denver Botanic Gardens for a gorgeous setting. KBCO and Swallow Hill for supporting and bringing Martin Sexton to Colorado!
I saw him as an opener for Susan Werner 20+ years ago and have been a super fan ever since! His live shows are an event even if it’s just him and his guitar. It’s what music should be…passionate, fun and nuanced.
I can’t say enough about seeing him live DO NOT PASS IT UP!
