Biography
Comprised of guitarist and frontman Matt Myers, keyboard and vocalist Katie Toupin, bassist Zak Appleby, and drummer Shane Cody, Houndmouth was born in 2011. On the back of successful and immersive performances in Louisville, Kentucky and around Indiana, the band was invited to perform at the 2012 SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. The show strongly aided the success of their debut, self-titled EP, following which Houndmouth were contacted by Geoff Travis of Rough Trade, who subsequently signed the band to his roster.
Later in 2012 the group was named “Band of the Week” by The Guardian, raising Houndmouth’s international reputation, before heading to the studio to record a debut full-length. In 2013 Houndmouth their debut studio album “From the Hills Below the City”, showcasing a selection of heart-on-the-sleeve, country/blues-infused, rock & roll tracks. In promotion of the record, Houndmouth performed on “Letterman”, “Conan”, and “World Cafe”, before embarking on their most ambitious tour to date including shows at Americana Music Festival, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza.
The majority of 2013 and 2014 was spent touring alongside the likes of the Wheeler Brothers, Andrew Combs, and Drive-By Truckers, regularly testing out new material. In March 2015, Houndmouth issued their sophomore studio album “Little Neon Limelight”, once again generating popular responses from the musical press.
Live reviews
Indiana four piece vocal group Houndmouth are a shining example of ingenuity and creative flare in the modern world of indie rock. They come together absolutely perfectly onstage with their melodic folk inspired sounds which are led exclusively by the acoustic tones played directly by the band themselves.
There is very little stage production or artificial sounds used through the show tonight to allow a real feeling of organic, natural music making. The likes of '15 Years' and 'Hey Rose' grab the audience's attention and completely transfix you as the quartet harmonise with expert timing. They have clearly been practicing hard and it shows tonight, the new material from 'Little Neon Limelight' is of an equally high quality as its predecessor and proves the band's debut was no fluke hit. With bags of potential, integrity and a warm stage personality Houndmouth are assured to continue their ascension to larger and larger stages.
Ripping it up across the U.S, Houndmouth strike a chord in everyone's heart that sends them into an orgasmic oblivion of country music.
Their journey began in 2011 when the band were playing a show and Geoff Travis, the head of Rough Trade was in the audience and offered a contract shortly after seeing their rendition of modern country music. The band have toured greatly since and last year released their stunning debut album 'From The Hills Below The City.'
It seems Alabama Shakes have shaken their Alabama 'shakes' onto Houndmouth, and Houndmouth may be in great debt to them for that because huge crowds come from all over to sing along with singers Matt Myers and Katie Toupin, feel the steady beat of the drums and howl to the guitar solos.
It's a fantastic sound on the record and live it's breath-taking. There's essences of Kings Of Leon later stuff and happiness that is glittered across the crowd when they perform.
With every intention of the Halloween festivities downtown, never would I have imagined my first Houndmouth concert to be so awful. Even before the band went on, people were already shoving you left to right. Granted, I am 5'2 and petite. It was unbearable and people were disrespectful, as they would shove you aside to try and get themselves, and their group of intoxicated friends in Halloween costumes, and their Halloween props - a wand, to be specific - that would from time to time hit people in the face; to the front. Security was nothing but useless this night. It's very unfortunate that I have to write this review, but I speak for many others this night who also followed us upon leaving. I looked forward to seeing Houndmouth that night, but unfortunately I was not able to stay long enough to see their entire set.
This was the third Houndmouth show I've seen. I am an absolute fan of their music, their style and their attitude. Katie Toupin's has the voice and soul that gives you goosebumps. It was unfortunate to see them this time at a sold out show at Madison Theater, though. It was WAY oversold and I'd imagine many people who were there didn't have the chance to see them perform, but inserted only heard them play. Trust me, with these guys, you want to see the show, because they put on a GREAT one.
Houndmouth slayed it last night! There was not a disappointing moment. They were full energy and had the crowd involved the whole time. Amazing tight talented band - great musicians, vocals, and song writing. Loved the saxaphone and the band's chemistry. I will see them every time they are in town. Asbury Lanes is also now my new favorite venue to see shows.
I've never seen Houndmouth live before but I started listening to their last album a few years ago and was hooked on their vibe. Super mellow, super chill, filled with mini-jam sessions, love all their songs. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they all share vocals on a lot of their songs. This is a multi-talented band and I'm so glad I got to see them! :)
Even though Katie recently departed the band week or so before his concert they still rocked! The harmonies & some of the songs weren't as good but overall they sounded great as Union Transfer is also a fab venue to see a concert!
Bonus was they covered one of my favorite Neil Young songs for an encore - Motion Pictures off his On the Beach record.
Great show! I live in Fishers and have been attending concerts at Nickel Plate since the beginning. The renovations are awesome. The sound quality and stage set up are much improved. Houndmouth is very talented, with a unique & diverse sound. They are very good live and bring a lot of energy to their set.
Very good show at a wonderful venue. Not a bad seat in the house and we arrived about 10 minutes before the opener started! Service was great as well! Would highly recommend seeing Houndmouth live in concert. The addition of the saxophones provided a very jazzy touch.
