Biography
Despite barely knowing one another before forming the band Real Friends have made huge musical strides in only a very short time. Bassist Kyle Fasel started the band alongside guitarist Dave Knox in 2010. Needing a vocalist and guitarist, the pair enlisted the help of Dan Lambton and Eric Haines respectively, before inviting drummer Brian Blake through Craigslist.
Real Friends’ sound is undeniably, unequivocally emo, pop punk, its members have been weaned on diets of American Football, Brand New, Jimmy Eat World and Taking Back Sunday throughout their youths. The band are also noted for their depressive and melancholic lyrics and creating symbolism on issues such of sleep deprivation and and weight loss.
In 2011 Real Friends released the EPs “This Is Honesty” and “Cheap Talk and Eager Lies” followed the year after with the EPs “Everyone That Dragged You Here”, “Acoustic Songs” and "Three Songs About The Past Year of My Life”. 2013 brought the band’s big break when they signed with Fearless Records and released the EP “Put Yourself Back Together” with an announcement of a studio album the following year.
Real Friends released their debut studio album “Maybe This Place Is The Same And We’re Just Changing” on July 22, 2014, which debuted at No. 24 on the Billboard 200. In support of the album the band played the 2014 Warped Tour and embarked on an extensive North American tour.
Live reviews
I first saw Real Friends when they opened for Wonder Years at the E-factory in Philly. The band brings a fresh and exciting energy to the stage that may be unsurpassed by other upcoming bands in their genre. Their lead singer Dan Lambton has a smile that could light up the world and upon meeting him after the show I found out that he is as genuine as they come. I also caught RF 4 times during Warped Tour and even with the hectic schedule of Warped, the band still had the energy to rock the house. If you like to sing, dance and just have a plain old good time, I suggest you take advantage of RF's upcoming tour and go see them. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
I first saw Real Friends in Baltimore at Vans Warped Tour 2018. They put on an amazing show, and they definitely shouldn't be missed. The only thing to know going in is that a crowd of Real Friends fans are absolutely insane. Be prepared to be pushed around in a mosh pit, and bombarded with crowd surfers. It'll happen whether you want it to or not. It doesn't let up. It is constant and consistent. And that's not to say it isn't fun. I'm just warning anyone who may not be thrilled with that sorta thing. So just be prepared. But if you're in the mood for a great Pop Punk concert, then Real Friends is the band for you.
