It’s probably not to much of a stretch to suggest that Charlotte Gainsbourg has taken on iconic status in both the worlds of alternative film and music; as an actress, her several collaborations with Lars von Trier, appearance in the Bob Dylan film I’m Not There and award for Best Actress at Cannes in 2009 for Antichrist have marked her out as one of the most versatile performers of her generation, whilst musically, she’s explored all kinds of territory, from collaborating with Madonna and bringing in Beck to produce one of her albums to bringing in the likes of Jarvis Cocker and Nigel Godrich on her second album, 5:55. She’s a rare proposition; an artist who has crossed disciplines because they need to, rather than simply because they want to. She’s already done enough to live up to the legacy of her famous parents - Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin - but her live performances have done her no harm in that respect, either; she brings an endearing intensity to proceedings that likely means she could perform a capella and be just as enthralling as she is with her band - her stunning show at London’s Somerset House back in 2012 is testament to her ability as a performer.
