A room above a fairly chi-chi bar-restaurant , incongruously smart among Hackney's unpretentious shopfronts, was hardly the venue I expected to host The Coathangers, with their scrappy brand of garagey post-punk. Stopping down to lift an unused monitor in front of a slipping bass drum, then laughingly carrying on with an energetic set is testament to a band with a can-do, DIY attitude born from prolific performing in a mix of venues.
I was concerned at first, but I had a great time. The venue is weirdly laid out, with an awkwardly-placed stage plainly more designed for a DJ show, but the sound was good, at least where I stood, fairly near the stage.
Both bands (Slowcoaches put on a high-octane set of youthful retro-post-punk) had plainly had a worthwhile soundcheck and sounded good from the first track, creating a surprising amount of enthusiasm from the Wednesday night punters. Coathangers played their whole set under moody red light (perhaps in response to the limitations of a fairly small lighting rig) and played a set concentrating on the strongest material from last year's Nosebleed Weekend, previous album Suck My Shirt and the title track off the new EP Parasite, with a couple of older tunes thrown in. All 3 women in the band sang lead and got behind the drum kit on at least one number, swapping instruments with surprising success and really pleasing the crowd. Pre-encore closer "Squeeki Tiki", played on Drums, bass and squeaky dog toy was a surprise set highlight and demonstrated this band's ability to embrace quirkiness without losing the listener.
The small bottle bar was well-staffed, who were chatty and friendly, was reasonably priced and not your £5 for a can of Red Stripe fare, but craft beers! Bonus! I will definitely be seeing bands at Oslo again, even if the venue's limitations might mean it struggles to attract more discerning artists.
I’ve only known about the Coathangers for a few months and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Their Youtube videos are fun and the music good, but after a spring where I’ve seen Sleater-Kinney, Patti Smith, The Julie Ruin and tonnes of other great gigs, it is not always easy for a new band to convince me they are more than a fad.
But the Coathangers succeeded.
They had great support in Dutch band St Tropez and the energy in the room only increased when the 3 Coathangers members got on stage. They come with a fun/cool/punky and somewhat irreverent attitude and it suits the music – and obviously pleased the fans. I loved that the two main singers’ voices are so different, so you will get the “howling punkiness” of the guitarist/singer and the “rough rockiness” of the drummer/singer - - and by the end they’d all switched instruments and the bassist got her time with the mike too.
Fun and games but also genuinely good musicianship and songs that I have not yet tired of listening to a week after the gig.
A band to watch.
Hang up your coats and start rocking with The Coathangers...I know, a terrible pun. But awful jokes aside, The Coathangers will blow your brain out of the top of your head! The Coathangers are made up of 3 girls that at first glance you are like 'Oh they seem nice and friendly,' and then BAM, they start banging away at their instruments and start singing and you hide behind the nearest chair. But you cant take your eyes of them. It's a kind of doom and gloom that you want to be part of in a weird way. The sound is vicious, aggressive, moody and they play with that charisma of 'I don't care I'm playing here,' which turns out to be sexy when they do it.
They are currently touring with PANGEA and are definitely on my 'bands to see.' If you wanna check out any of their stuff, watch them bang out 'Jaybird,'
Sugar and spice and everything nice. Nothing like watching 3 talented ladies jamming out on stage. All 3 are equally talented. Punk tunes w sweet little girl and deep demonic vocals. Excellent performers! Keep you on ur feet and make every second enjoyable. Not only are they great on the stage but also off stage! They are so friendly and cooky. Can't wait to see them again
This band is amazing. Their live performances are brilliant. They take you to the place you hoped to be in. It's like taking drugs. I will see them every time they to town. Opening bands were awesome.
The act was Ron Gallo. Really good gig, so much energy !
The coathangers were good too, a little drunk perhaps. A little disappointed that Rusty was not wearing her little black dress though...
Definitely Punk no slow moments in the show I was impressed. Three man band guitar bass drums all three sing different song solo and together. I would recommend you put them on your list to see
loud, energetic and mad. three women with a don't give a s**t attitude what's not to like i would highly recommend that you go and see this band and do it soon....
