Biography
Title Fight initially started out as a trio comprised of twin brothers Ned and Ben Russin and frontman Jamie Rhoden. In 2005 the band would eventually add a second guitarist Shane Moran. Like many of the early emo bands from the 90s,Title Fight started out playing very small gigs with a strong community feeling. They played several of their shows at the Teen Center in the YMCA and a now defunct local venue Cafe Metropolis.
Though the band had been together since 2003 they put out their first label release in 2007 (that was their split release with the Erection Kids through FlightPlan Records). The group put out their song “Kingston” as a 7” in 2008 through the same label. The band then started touring with like-minded bands such as Fireworks and Set Your Goals. Their live show caught the attention of the label Run for Cover Records and through this label they released their upcoming 7” “The Last Thing You Forget”. The CD version of this release was a compilation of their newly recorded 7” and all the material the band recorded in the past.
With their change in label the band also saw a change in sound. They shifted from their slim-cut explosive punk rock style to a more lethargic and melodically jagged sound heard from bands like the Promise Ring and Texas is the Reason. The group released yet another single written specifically for the Triple B Record compilation, “America’s Hardcore”. The group continued to bulk up their profile touring the US with bands like Bayside, Senses Fail and Balance and Company. The group even made their way out to Japan to play with the melodic-hardcore artist H20.
Close to eight years after the band’s formation they released their debut album “Shed” in early 2011. The band promoted this release with their first headline tour, bringing along supporting acts Touche Amore, Dead End Path Shook Ones and The Menzingers. The band followed up this tour with a worldwide run hitting Australia and multiple European cities. The group also stopped off in the UK to play the Reading and Leeds festival.
The following year Title Fight issued their sophomore release “Floral Green”. The album was a great success for the band managing to break its way into the Billboard Top 200 at No. 69. On 12 November 2013 the band released their EP “Spring Songs” on Revelation Records. The following year the band signed on to the label ANTI-Records.
Live reviews
Title Fight’s latest release “Floral Green” received well deserved acclaim. Their brand of post-hardcore sees them flirt between punk and emo at points; remaining heavy and loud at all points. When “Numb, But I Still Feel It” kicks in, the crowd goes wild instantly. Crowd surfers everywhere. The band don’t need to do much on stage to get the audience moving, except play their songs. Older, faster songs like “Shed” and “Youreyeah” see the crowd carrying on throwing themselves everywhere, but slower moments are interspersed such as the wonderful combination of “Safe in Your Skin” and “Lefty” which allow everyone to sing along. Bassist and vocalist Ned Russin spins in circles while the other guitarists walk around the stage and drummer Ben Russin provides great technical drumming. The slower songs show off the band’s control and prowess, translating well live. A lot of bands in this genre can often come off as detached or uninterested when they play, but Title Fight seem so deeply into their music. Frankly, it wouldn’t matter either way, as the crowd play perhaps the biggest part at a Title Fight show, singing each word as loud as possible and trying to break crowd surfing records.
