Biography
Following their university graduations, DJs Aaron Bring (ABX) and Steve Reidell (STV SLV) soon moved to Chicago, and after listening to the likes of Girl Talk and Them Jeans, became inspired to craft hip-hop mash-ups of their own. The DJs subsequently buried themselves into their computers mixing the likes of Mos Def with Battles, TLC with Led Zeppelin, and Lloyd with Feist. The duo’s debut output was the 27-track mixtape “The Hood Internet Mixtape Volume One” in 2007, followed shortly after by the 29-track mixtape “The Hood Internet Mixtape Volume Two” the same year. Uploaded to their blog, the mixtapes generated a significant audience for The Hood Internet and led to the pair performing live at venues across the U.S.
The Hood Internet maintained this prodigious output into 2008 with the release of the mixtapes “The Hood Internet vs. Chicago” and “The Hood Internet Mixtape Volume Three”. The former mixtape of which made a number of year-end lists, representing a huge feat for a group releasing music in a non-traditional format.
In 2010 The Hood Internet’s profile was raised further when street clothing brand Mishka sponsored the pair’s subsequent mixtape “Trillwave”. In an attempt to expand their music style and fan base into new areas, the duo released their debut full-length album “Feat” in 2012. Issued by Decon Records, the album host contributions from AC Newman, Class Actress, Psalm One and the Rosebuds, and earned a string of positive reviews. Towards the tail-end of 2012 The Hood Internet issued the remix album “Feat REMIXES”, after which the pair produced the 2013 Sole single, “Gangster of Love”.
Live reviews
As the name that they go by suggests, The Hood Internet are quite clearly an act in thrall to the possibilities that the internet has opened up, these past few years, for hip hop as a genre; it’s especially true of alternative hip hop, whereby artists play by different rules and experiment more than the mainstream side of the style would really allow. The Chicago duo - comprised of ABX and STV SLV - were primarily concerned with mashing up other hip hop tracks to begin with, after they formed in 2007, but have since gone on to pursue original material, in the form of their one album to date, FEAT; the album features underground guest spots form the likes of Tobacco, Class Actress and Cadence Weapon. In addition, the pair have also pursued slightly sillier things, like Album Tacos, a series of photoshopped classic album covers with tacos covering the original content, but they’ve also played live sets, which has seen them mash up classic hip hop cuts in a slick and often comical manner; it’s little wonder, then, that they’ve managed to carve out a cult fanbase, one that’s no doubt eagerly awaiting the next move from the duo in the studio; in the meantime, you can catch them across Europe this autumn, with a UK date lined up for London’s Jazz Cafe on September 28th.
It was like a private party! All 15 of us had a great time! Great tunes but a little to DIY of a set up. The poor guys probably broke their backs bending over the short table to use the equipment. Come on SA show more support and we'll get more talent. More talent=more fun!
