Laura Stevenson, hails from somewhere on the other side of the Atlantic, in a place called New York, writing folk and indie rock on her guitar and piano. She made a name for herself by being the keyboard player in a band called “Bomb the Music Industry!”
If ever you get the chance to go and see her live then you should definitely take that opportunity! She performs with a full band behind her and they make a pretty big sound together. Tonight is all about the most recent songs that she released in the form of a full-length studio album called “Wheel”. She covers all bases by performing some of her most well known material such as songs called “Runner” and “Master of Art”. Where she has written some beautiful melodies that are countered in such great fashion in other instruments playing, but is well supported by a strong four to the floor backbeat. Her sound could maybe be compared to her contemporaries such as Tegan & Sara, or maybe even Kate Voegele.
An acquaintance convinced me to go see "Laura Stevenson and The Cans" in Berlin. This was on rather short notice so I only listened to some random songs before the concert. To be honest: I wasn't sure if I would like it. Stevenson's voice sounded somewhat high-pitched. But I enjoyed every minute of the show. The voice is not so girly squeaky in real. Little but nice talk in between. Having learned to play the accordion, I'm always surprised to see how well this instrument goes along with non-folk rock music. I especially loved those songs. So, if you can, go see her/ them.
Laura and the band were great, Laura has incredible game vocals and perfect pitch, one of the best live singers I’ve ever seen. The cello player was a nice addition to complement Laura’s playing style and sound.
Unfortunately the crowd was rude and talking in the back bar during the entire performance, maybe the staff could do a better job asking people to be more respectful of the artists while they perform. There are plenty of other bars on High St for people looking to drunkenly mingle.
