Live reviews
We have seen her several times recently and the fact we keep going back again shows how much we have enjoyed Kathryns performances.
She has been playing her most recent album "From when I wake the want is" in it's entiriety (as seems to be kinda the latest fashion)supplemented with a couple of older songs and the odd cover version for good measures.
Out of the six performances I have witnessed over the course of around seven months I think we have come to see an artist bloom in front of our eyes as she has warmed to her art and became more comfortable on stage talking inbetween songs, telling funny stories and anecdotes about the inspiration behind some of her excellent material.
Added to that Kathryn is a lovely warm person and has time for her fans treating us like family with cuddles autograph's and selfies all perfectly acceptable, we even got to meet het amazing father at a recent performance in Paisley.
If you get a chance to go and see her perform live I would highly recommend it, is a lovely experience, sadly it maybe a few months before that's possible as at the time of writing kathryn is due to support The Twilight Sad in Canada and America in May but hoping she will be doing some shows in August possibly then November is pencilled in.
Kathryn’s show is every inch the performance art piece as she does not engage with the audience during the show. She leaves the piano only to sip her wine which is placed within a desk lamp sculpture behind her and rearrange the mirror installation which surrounds her piano. She spends an hour playing songs mainly from her latest album ‘From when I wake’. Beautiful renditions of her intense thought provoking songs which enthrall the somewhat art house and impeccably behaved crowd. In her rope cum pyjama pink costume with hair in a bun she fits her surroundings well. I would have liked to spend longer with her given that she is the only performer of the evening but she makes a very sociable and grateful appearance in the bar afterwards and those of us who wait are rewarded with her genuinely friendly presence.
I got to see the force of nature that is Kathryn Joseph at Summerhall. Siobhan Wilson was supporting so this was a gig not to be missed. Kathryn Joseph held everyone in a trance with her Nyman-esque piano playing and otherworldly vocals. My favourite song was The Weary and surely that obscenely dirty bass should banned for it's power to corrupt! The crowd was so rapt that there was a transfixed stillness but I could not stop moving to the rhythm of sparse beats and atmospheric accompaniment. I will have to seek out another chance to experience a Kathryn Joseph gig and I urge you to also.
Kathryn's shows are always so memorable. Whenever she's playing anywhere in central Scotland I always try to go to see her. I've never seen another performer like her. Beautifully crafted songs heavy with real, genuine emotion performed with intensity and grit, often interspersed with relatable and really funny chat in between. That juxtaposition between the deep music that just hits you in a really profound way and when she lets her personality and humour show through is just really special. A completely amazing performer.
Utterly amazing, especially with the acoustics of the Barbican concert hall. Beautiful songs in an amazing setting. Just her voice and a keyboard, I'm so glad I went. I left before the main act as I was there only to see her.
