Biography
The stage name Saweetie comes from a nickname her grandma gave her. Her vocals, music production skills, and masterful branding have put her on the map as a hip hop artist to watch out for.
Saweetie’s fame and fortune came from a lot of hard work. With dedication and discipline, she forged her own path, recording her first-ever song at the age of thirteen. She also attained a college education, graduating from San Diego State University with a degree in communications. And until she did make it, she worked to keep herself afloat.
Fortunately, Saweetie had a supportive network of friends and family already in the music and entertainment industries. Her mom was featured in music videos with popular artists like Nelly and DMX. One of her cousins is actress Gabrielle Union, who starred in movies like Bad Boys II, alongside Will Smith. Her grandfather, former NFL San Francisco 49ers linebacker Willie Harper, is among her family. Another cousin of hers is legendary rap producer Zaytoven — who worked on some of her best tracks.
The rapper came onto the scene when she posted an early version of her breakout hit “Icy Girl” in 2012, which she later released on SoundCloud. Once exposure from the “Icy Girl” music video got her a wider audience — with over 100 million hits on YouTube so far — she picked up a manager and major label record deal with Warner Bros. Records. That very same year, she appeared in an ad for singer Rihanna’s cosmetics line Fenty.
Ever since the release of her debut EP High Maintenance, her stardom has only kept rising. In nine short songs, Saweetie proved herself to be a bonafide hip hop phenomenon, able to kick hardcore lyrics on one track then belt out some sweet harmony on the next. The record went gold in two months and has since gone multi-platinum.
Saweetie’s first record title, High Maintenance, is something she aspires to. As she explains, "The relationships I have with people are very high maintenance, meaning I nurture them. I also pray a lot, work out, and eat well, so all aspects of my life are high maintenance.… I feel like it's an appropriate way to brand myself."
Saweetie followed up on High Maintenance in 2019 with her second EP, Icy, and collaborated with clothing brand PrettyLittleThing on her own line of apparel the same year. She’s since dropped single after single from her upcoming studio album The Single Life, including the chart-topping “Tap In” and “Best Friend” (featuring Doja Cat).
With a new album on the way and award nominations and wins, there seems to be no limit to this artist’s success. Audiences continue to expect bigger and bigger things as Saweetie promises to keep surprising fans with more music, acting appearances, and even some rumored business enterprises coming in the near future.
Live reviews
I have seen Saweetie twice in the last 3 weeks and both times were wack. The first show was at the club Argyle with a $20 cover fee in Hollywood. She played Icy Girl and that was it. She was up on the DJ booth just singing along to other songs for the rest of the night (showed up 30 mins till the club closing). The second performance was in Fresno at Aldos night club with a $25 cover fee and again only played Icy Girl. She told us that the DJ didnt have her music so she'd have to perform accapella. She did Anti and High Maintance accapella, which was cool, but why come all the way to
Fresno to perform and not have any music lined up? I definitely wouldn't recommend wasting your money on a club performance.
Regarding previous reviewer complaining about Saweetie playing 1 song - the San Francisco show at 1015 Folsom I think washer first real concert as a headliner. However, she does a LOT of "hosting", which is when the artist and the club make money on the artists name, but its not really a concert, its a "party". The artist comes out just before closing and does a song or two. Thats not a concert, totally different.
My friends and I were waiting in line as soon as the doors opened at 9, and after about 15-20 minutes the security guards came out and told us to go home because there was an artist cancellation. We don’t even know if we’ll get refunded because on Eventbrite it said no refunds
Venue was a amazing, cannot say enough about 1015 Folsom. Great place to see a show. Crowd was amazing, waited 2 hours but was fun dancing. Saweetie was worth the wait. Great performance. Not an extensive playlist, but that was expected. Loved the show!
