Boys Like Girls is an American rock band. Their style is best described as a fusion of emo, pop punk and alternative rock. The band plays high-energy gigs best suited to festival and arena venues.
In July 2013 Boys Like Girls played Boston Common. The boys, clad in black band t-shirts and sporting tattoos, played to an excitable and screaming crowd. Front man, Martin Johnson, demonstrated his ability to command an audience, chatting easily between songs. At one point, Boys Like Girls gave one of the greatest examples of audience participation. They invited a lucky member of the crowd to join Martin onstage for a duet of ‘Two is Better than One.’ What better way is there to please your fans?
Boys Like Girls played tracks from across their eight-year career. They kicked off with ‘The Great Escape’ from their debut, self-titled album. Instantly, the crowd was jumping to this guitar-heavy anthem of teen escapism. The band continued with the teen angst theme and gave a rendition of ‘She’s Got a Boyfriend Now.’ This song is from their second studio album, ‘Drunk Love.’ In recognition of the fact that their loyal fan base had grown-up since the release of their first album, the lyrics have a retrospective tone to them.
Boys Like Girls showed that they are also capable of mixing things up. They chose to slow things down at the end of the set with an unexpected and welcome cover of The Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude.’
