In 2001 Tellier signed with Record Makers where he released his debut album “L'incroyable Vérité” (The Incredible Truth) presenting his quirky blend of lo-fi electronica, new-wave pop and piano riddled cabaret sung in both English and French. Receiving raving reviews, the album provided Tellier with the opportunity to support French Electro duo Air allowing him to work on stage with American theremin player Pamelia Kurstin.
Four years later he released his second album entitled “Politics” in name and subject matter which saw him collaborate with Nigerian drummer Tony Allen and incorporate string arrangements in the popular track “La Ritournelle” which served well as a track for many artists to remix, most famously by Metronomy.
His third album “Sexuality” released in 2008 and produced by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, one half of French house duo Daft Punk added more synthpop with an underlying R&B tone, making it Tellier’s most commercial release peaking at number 33 in the French album charts.
On 24 May 2008 Tellier represented France in the Eurovision Song Contest held in Belgrade, Serbia. With an eccentric performance, involving him entering the stage in a golf buggy accompanied by backing singers dressed exactly like Tellier with matching beards. Part way through Tellier inhales helium adding to the already apparent comical effect. His incredibly catchy synthtastic track “Divine” was the first French entry into the competition to be largely sung in English which sparked controversy with his fellow countrymen citing that as the reason France didn’t chart very highly.
With his music being used left, right and centre on soundtracks and on remixes, Tellier has become a synth-pop sensation with his unique brand, eccentricity, spontaneity, witty sense of humour and unforgettable performances time after time.
It’s important to point out that, just because 2manydjs and Soulwax involve the same people - specifically, David and Stephen Dewaele - and just because the pair often play shows that involve both sides of their musical careers, with both of those acts involved, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t entirely distinct entities, not least sonically. Where 2manydjs, perhaps unsurprisingly, have always been very much a dance act, Soulwax has seen the brothers explore the alternative rock scene, instead; for proof of their early credentials, consider the fact that their debut record under the moniker, 1996’s Leave the Story Untold, was produced by none other than Queens of the Stone Age collaborator Chris Goss. In the years since, they’ve gradually begun to work in more and more electronic, synthpop and dance influences into their sound, whilst keeping it entirely separate from their work as 2manydjs. Their live shows, as Soulwax, continue to incorporate a full live band, similar to, say LCD Soundsystem, with the rhythm sections key to a sound that, with its repetitive and often droney nature, is not too far removed from krautrock. The pair continue to play regular Soulwaxmas events at the end of the year across the UK to packed rooms; nothing’s been announced for this coming December yet, but certainly keep your eyes peeled.

Getting ready for this show was nerve wrecking. I must have checked my outfit ten times to make sure that I looked okay. I also must have triple checked my hair and makeup too. I wanted to look perfect for this show. I wanted to feel perfect too. Seeing Sébastien Tellier has always been a dream of mine, and I wanted nothing to mess up my experience or make it anything less than perfect. I was determined to make this my night. The stage was lit perfectly, not too bright and not too dim. It didn't hurt my eyes which is usually an issue with many other venues.
His clothes were adorable, much like him, and I almost lost my breath looking at him. I was taken aback at how well he sang, and I wanted to stand there in that moment forever and listen to his voice. It was like angels from the sky had come down and blessed this one man, Sébastien Tellier, with the voices of every angel in Heaven. I was so happy that I got to see him. I felt perfect, I looked perfect, and my entire night was perfect. I love Sébastien Tellier, he is the man!
