Join us for a cinematic evening under the stars soundtracked by Lifafa and Arushi Jain—two brilliant and innovative voices in today’s South Asian musical landscape.
Making his North American debut with his only scheduled US performance, Lifafa uses disco, sampled loops, cosmic guitar, and folk instruments, bridging traditional sounds with contemporary electronic production. Sung in Urdu and Hindi, his deeply personal music defies what an Indian musician should sound like and instead offers a vision of what the future of the music from the region could be.
Composer, vocalist, and modular synthesist Arushi Jain is rooted in the sounds of Indian classical music and uses live musicians and dance floor beats to unite New York and New Delhi. Her music, which draws as much from Terry Riley, Aphex Twin, and The Cocteau Twins as traditional ragas and talas, has been hailed by Pitchfork, Fader, and The Guardian.
The event is produced in partnership with Discostan, a Los Angeles-based event producer, record label, and creative project dedicated to highlighting music from the Subcontinent, North Africa, Central Asia, and the Arab world. For the past 15 years, Discostan has put on shows from Lahore to Los Angeles featuring DJs, musicians, film screenings, and performance art, seeking to highlight underrepresented and imaginative voices from the SWANA diaspora.
This performance is supported in part by the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture.
