Preen intertwines the rawness and melancholy of 90s alternative folk, think Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes and Belle and Sebastian, with the playfulness of late-60s melodic pop, think Carpenters, Harry Nilsson and Beatles. Three voices together in harmony – those of Robin Finetto, David Lawton and Evie Tarr – form their sound, not only in recordings and live shows but also at the heart of the songwriting process. Since forming in 2020, they have become staples of the city's indie scene, playing sold out shows at Moth Club, The Lexington and SJQ last year. In 2025, they completed their first UK tour and played their first European show in Barcelona, Spain.
2025 also saw the release of their self-titled EP which the band recorded at Chale Abbey studios on the Isle of Wight (previously used by Michael Kiwanuka and Black Country, New Road) with a production team of Charles Watson (of Slow Club) and David Granshaw, together forming Major Companion. The EP was released by Small Matter Records and has been featured on BBC radio 6Music frequently. The band are now working on their debut album, due to be released in full at the beginning of 2027.
