All that we really know about Steven Zhu as a person is that he was born in 1989 and doesn’t really like to say all that much else about himself. He’s an intensely private person, preferring to keep himself as anonymous as he can and let the music speak for itself. The unfortunate thing for him is that the music is so outrageously good that we must know more about him, and considering he’s created this much hype despite the debuting in February 2014, he’s going to have to get really good at staying anonymous very, very quickly. His first track was “Moves Like Ms Jackson”, a mashup of several Outkast tracks that he posted onto his Soundcloud account.
That track gave him an audience thanks to it featuring on a number of blogs. That audience began to grow at an alarming rate when he started producing more tracks and put them on his Soundcloud page. He soon signed a contract with the record label Mind Of A Genius, who put out his first E.P “The Nightday” in April 2014. His first single was released on the same day as the E.P, and “Faded” ended up being a top five hit in both Australia and the U.K. As if that wasn’t enough, it ended up being nominated for Best Dance Recording at the following year’s Grammy Awards as well, almost exactly a year after he put his first track on Soundcloud.
Clearly, Zhu is an artist with a very bright future. Very few other artists have caused such a phenomenal stir in their first year of existence, and chances are it’s going to keep building with time. The sky’s the limit for ZHU, and he comes highly recommended.
Since emerging in the dance scene in 2018, she has performed her “one-
woman jam band” DJ sets blending her decks with her live piano plus sampler at high-profile
festivals including Coachella, EDC, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Tomorrowland, Electric Forest
and Creamfields. She's also supported iconic artists like Pete Tong (opening up for him two
nights at London’s O2 Arena and then sitting in with the Ibiza Classics orchestra on a grand
piano to play a song she wrote with them), Fatboy Slim, Diplo, Mochakk, DJ Tennis, Dead &
Co, John Summitt and Sofi Tukker, everywhere from Fabric in London, Red Rocks
Amphitheatre in Colorado, The Warehouse Project in Manchester, to Amnesia and Ushuaïa
in Ibiza. Wanting to change the statistic that only 2% of producers are women, she has
provided thousands of female and gender-expansive individuals access to production
workshops, online courses, and scholarship programs for LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC creators with
her nonprofit FEMME HOUSE. They have also done stage takeovers at EDC and Hulaween
Music Festival, as well as a Femme House Tour in partnership with Ableton that included in-
person workshops during the day and booking all female/gender expansive lineups at night all
across the US in 2022. She was also nominated for Breakthrough Producer in DJ Mag’s Best
of North America Awards and landed on the cover of Spotify's Best of Electronic Music 2022.
Now signed to Ninja Tune's Counter Records, LP Giobbi will be releasing her long awaited
debut album, Light Places, on May 12, 2023. In January 2023, she shared an official remix
album of The Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia’s 1972 solo debut album, Garcia remixing the
album in its entirety. This comes as a career highlight amongst an already impressive
collection of remixes LP Giobbi has done for the likes of Portugal. The Man, Kx5, Diplo &
TSHA, MK, Dom Dolla, Tycho, Carlita and many more.
Steven Zhu may have only appeared in 2014 yet he is already gaining quite a reputation on the electro music scene. For almost the whole year he remained completely anonymous as many artists of the genre have as he wanted to be judged on the music alone. Luckily the music was very strong so his personality never particularly came into it. He showed huge promise with his first track 'Moves Like Ms. Jackson' demonstrating his mixing and producing abilities and it has now become a highlight in his live show.
The follow-up single 'Faded' became an international hit and earned him a Grammy nomination which seemed to be a huge shock for the musician who claims the project is solely about the art. There is no doubt this has helped with demand to see the performer live as his stages seem to be constantly expanding in size yet Steven handles this with ease as he is really confident in his mixes and abilities as a DJ. There is some great music included from 'The Nightday' EP and the full length debut looks to be a promising affair.
2 hours of fanastic music, fun and a perfect concert experience - thank you for this awesome home-show in Dresden a few weeks back. Haven't danced and celebrated a concert like this for quite a while. Many guest singers, great light show, perfect sound engineering (I could have done without the pyrotechnics, but ok).
And all of that even though he had been really sick the days before. Thank you for these amazing memories!!
