City Winery Boston presents The Soap Girls with Happy Little Clouds live on June 23rd at 7:00pm
The SoapGirls are a French-born, South African-raised alternative rock duo consisting of sisters Noemie "Mie" Debray (guitar, vocals) and Camille "Mille" Debray (bass, vocals). Distinguished by their "Revolt Rock" sound and a strictly independent "DIY" ethos, the sisters are the sole architects of their career—writing, arranging, and producing 100% of their musical catalogue, management, and visual identity themselves.
The duo first gained public attention as child street performers in Cape Town, singing and selling handmade soap to benefit local hospitals—an origin that provided both their name and their reputation for social action. Their international breakthrough occurred in 2009 with the song "Boys Boys Boys," which featured on a Japanese compilation disc and sparked global interest. This momentum led to a major-label contract with Universal Music South Africa and high-profile television appearances, including performing as guest artists on Idols SA (Top 10).
Happy Little Clouds is a genre-blurring grit-pop band from Boston crafting emotionally charged, melody-forward music with a raw edge, radiant heart, and live chops.
Their self-described sound “grit-pop” weaves the the nerve of post-grunge, brightness of power pop, & the introspection of 90s alt-rock. Jac Mestel’s unfiltered, heart-on-sleeve lyrics entwine with catchy-AF melodies and emerge as vocals that have been known to turn heads. Derek Bergstrom’s creamy bass counter-melodies mix with Mestel’s driving guitar. Jess Townsend’s (World/Inferno) unique, expressive drumming is the underlying pulse that brings the band to life. Happy Little Clouds built itself on a foundation of vulnerability, loud guitars, fresh drum beats, and fearless storytelling. Proudly independent & unapologetically themselves, HLC has emerged as a compelling voice in the indie scene.
The SoapGirls rock. That is all. If you have any doubts about this, or you're in two minds wondering if it's at all possible for The SoapGirls to rock, I am here to set your mind to rest and take your doubts into a large field and set fire to them. The SoapGirls rock, and if you see them play live too, you will believe.
