So it turns out we still have something to thank MySpace for after the first decade of the new millennium. Since without it, it’s quite likely that we wouldn’t have one of the EDM scene’s brightest hopes for the future in a very long time.
After being inspired to create electronic music by the French electro godheads Justice, Zedd set about making a name for himself and in 2011, decided to try messaging dubstep wunderkind Skrillex with one fateful message.
He said: “Hey, 99.9% of the EDM scene sucks, you’re the last bit that does not, you’re awesome and you’ll like my music.” Before the Kaiserslautern born native knew what was happening, he was put through to Skrillex’s booking agent, and was on tour with him shortly after.
Since then, everyone from Ellie Goulding, to Foxes, Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga have worked with Zedd. His album “Clarity” was released in 2012 to great acclaim and strong sales but his collaboration with Paramore’s Hayley Williams was what broke him out as a solo artist in his own right, leading to the world wide smash hit “Stay The Night”.
This is a man that can write record and release all this while still performing up to 150 shows as a DJ in a year, and there is still a very long time before his 30th birthday. This is an artist with the world at his feet and the best is yet to come.
Musical since the age of seven, Jeff Montalvo actually grew up playing the drums and making punk music. He played with many bands but eventual frustration with band members and delays in the music making process caused him to strike out on his own and experiment with electronic music. As he began to take his craft more seriously and release music, Montalvo chose the name Seven Lions, which was taken from the children’s book “Latro in the Mist”.
Seven Lions really began making waves in 2011 when he started releasing remixes of artists such as Delirium, Above & Beyond and Paul Van Dyk. One remix of “You Got to Go” by Above & Beyond went to number two on the Beatport Dubstep Chart. This track won the DJ a lot of attention and he was soon signed to Skrillex’s OWSLA label to release his first EP.
This EP was “Days to Come” and it quickly shot to the number two spot on the iTunes Dance Chart, went to number one on Beatport and was a top 10 hit on the Billboard Dance Chart. After Seven Lions’ work received radio airtime from DJs such as Britain’s Zane Lowe, the DJ’s profile elevated substantially.
In 2014, Seven Lions’ star continued to rise when the DJ released his third EP, “Worlds Apart”. The record went to number two on the US Billboard Dance Chart and the single of the same name hit the 141 spot on the UK singles chart. The “Worlds Apart” EP featured singers Ellie Goulding and Kerli, with the tracks focussing more on the content of the song rather than the beat itself.
Seven Lions claims to be influenced by Viking metal; it is a style that he listens to frequently and that inspires him. A regular performer at festivals, Seven Lions has made DJ appearances at SXSW, Electric Daisy Carnival, Electric Zoo and Ultra Music Festival, amongst others.
Born Martin Stääf on the West Coast of Sweden, Liquid Stranger’s first musical excursion was playing classical piano from a very early age. Stääf was a natural talent on the instrument, and was playing concerts by the time he was six years old, however, as he neared his tenth birthday he started becoming more interested in synthesizers than Stravinsky. By the time he hit his teens he’d completely lost interest in classical music and began producing electronica in his every waking hour. By the time Stääf was 19 he’d formed Necton with fellow producer Patrik Olsén, but while the band signed to Spirit Zone Recordings and released two studio albums, Stääf was beginning his solo career, releasing an abundance of singles and compilation records on a number of different record labels.
Necton folded in 2003, and it was then that Stääf made his debut as Liquid Stranger, releasing his debut single “It Came From The Dessert” the very same year. Ever Since then, Stääf has remained one of the most prolific electronica artists of this millennium, releasing six studio albums, eight E.Ps and nine singles in a little over a decade. His music has been a major influence on sounds and scenes ranging from dubstep to funky house to ambient and everything in between, and for that, he comes highly recommended.
The duo issued a debut EP, 7 Dollar Bill, shortly after forming, and also began releasing remixes of artists like Major Lazer, Peking Duk, and Tom Piper. The year 2013 saw the release of a second EP, The Quack, which featured a collaboration with American rapper Action Bronson. Later that year, the single "High You Are [Branchez Remix]" arrived, followed by 2014's "Tell Me," a collaboration with RL Grime. Flume left the project in 2015, shortly before the release of the Gemini EP. The EP included the eponymous hit single, which featured Sydney-based singer and producer Jessica Higgs, better known as George Maple.

Another single, "Lone," dropped the following year. That track appeared on 2016's Divide & Conquer EP, which included collaborations with Kimbra and Rome Fortune as well as Maple. Instead reunited with Maple for that October's "Afterglow," a single by Australian rapper Tkay Maidza that also featured production work by Djemba Djemba. In late 2016, What So Not and Skrillex teamed up with Grime on the single "Waiting." After the release of the stand-alone single "Better" in 2017, What So Not began the rollout for his debut full-length. Arriving in early 2018, Not All the Beautiful Things featured appearances by familiar faces Skrillex ("Goh") and Rome Fortune ("Demons"), as well as an inspired roster of additional guests including Daniel Johns (Silverchair, the Dissociatives), Slumberjack, San Holo, and Toto. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
Anton Zaslavki is a grammy winning DJ and producer, and is one of the top EDM artists, but is better known as Zedd. Like most EDM stars these days, a lot of his tracks feature other artists, usually vocalists like his grammy winning song “ Clarity” which features Foxes. But what you may not know is that Zedd is also a classically trained pianist making him a multi-talented artist, as opposed to the “EDM DJs only push buttons and are not real artist” reputation. Knowing this information, you get a better realization of where his inspiration comes from when he makes his own tracks. When given the opportunity, like when I was able to see him live, he played the piano for the popular song “Stay The Night,” instead of staying behind the DJ equipment.
The biggest problem that you encounter with such a huge DJ is that when they have their live sets, the artists that they collaborate with may not be there. Case in point: Hayley Williams, the original vocalist for “Stay The Night” was on tour with her own band and could not make this performance. This meant Zedd needing to use another vocalist, or the recorded track. He went with another vocalist, who wasn’t so great.
Regardless of these possibilities, Zedd is an EDM genius, and his shows are super energetic and loads of fun.
This concert was so amazing. I’m so glad I bought the tickets and it was worth the drive. This was the first concert I bought tickets for. My friend and I have such a good time I would definitely do this again in the future.
I have watched Seven Lions grow from an incredible opener for the likes of Porter Robinson, Krewella, and Excision in 2013 to a must-see headliner for his very own Worlds Apart Tour in 2014 that is taking the electronic music world by storm.
Every time I see his name on a lineup, I know I am going to hear something amazing, moving, and majestic. Seven Lions makes mind-opening music, taking elements that are worlds apart and fusing them into tracks that are as effortless as they are unique.
Hauntingly beautiful, the deep bass and minor tones of his music keep you on edge while enchanting vocals and ethereal progressions leave the world behind. His shows consume the audience with a captivating blend of trance and bass that prove he is one of most skilled and creative producers in the industry.
Like a fantasy novel, the rich detail of Seven Lions’ sound creates an alternate universe for the audience to marvel at and explore. From his unforgettable track “Days to Come” to his eerie and stirring remix of Tritonal’s “Still with Me,”
Seven Lions has always added a powerful texture to his music, one of longing but also one of inspiration. Becoming ever more popular, he has not lost this touch; tracks off his most recent Worlds Apart EP such as “Nepenthe” continue to combine chilling melodies with intense beats.
I wasn’t sure what to expect listening to 1991 live. This was the first time I would have seen him and it was nothing short of incredible. The transition from liquid to just filthy. This dude got the crowd going! He’s also a total sweetheart and down to earth. Was such a pleasure hanging out with him after his set. A must see if you get the chance!
