Jim James approaches his performances as if he wants his audience to have a religious experience listening to his music. His angelic voice is delivered with so much spirit and soul that it is sure to move anyone that is graced by its presence.
Although Jim James’ solo material approaches a similar style to his work with his band, My Morning Jacket, he also encompasses new styles and lets himself jump to the forefront of the music allowing himself to have a greater control of where the music is going. My Morning Jacket’s songs would frequently go into psychedelic jam sessions, but Jim James’ material seems to be more structured at times, although he does occasionally veer off into experimental jams, which includes playing the saxophone. Jim James also seems to have taken a more soul and jazz oriented sound with his performances as well as incorporating elements of electronic music. Jim James still approaches his singing style with a very soulful voice, which contains hints of reverb shimmering through.
Jim James’ solo performances also show him having a more free range on stage. He often takes the microphone up in his hand and struts around stage while serenading the audience with his entrancing voice in a crooner like fashion. His stage presence is also captivating. He usually dresses in a suave suit and fervently dances around stage while getting into his music. His performances are also highly engaging due to the excellent stage lighting, which creates very atmospheric vibes as well as very visually exciting displays of lights.
