THE WANTS is a New York City post-punk band formed in 2017 by songwriter, guitarist and producer Madison Velding-VanDam and drummer Jason Gates. Their sound fuses sharp songwriting with unstable rhythms, electronics and live instrumentation. Following the release of their acclaimed debut album Container (2020), the band spent five years expanding their sonic palette before returning with the darker, more abrasive Bastard (2025), recorded with Peter Katis. Praised for its enigmatic atmosphere, the album was later reimagined through remixes by Factory Floor, Broken English Club and Gorgonn. Alongside the band, Velding-VanDam also founded the independent label STTT, dedicated to experimental music. The Wants are currently finishing work on their third album.
