One of the original Mowtown bands, best known for their 1962 smash hit ‘Do You Love Me’, which then rose the prominence again after its prominent use in 1988’s classic film ‘Dirty Dancing’, can still put on an excellent live show. Although some would say they are ‘past it’, they take old age in their stride, engaging the audience with tongue in cheek remarks like ‘back in 1962, when I still had hair…’. Original member Joe Billingsea seems in his element leading the band, and although he hasn’t quite retained the physique of his younger self, his vocal range and energy make this unimportant.
As one of Mowtown’s first big bands, their current setlists become almost a sort of Mowtown celebration, covering everything from The Isley Brother’s ‘Shout’ to Smokey Robinson and the Miracle’s ‘Tears of A Clown’, which they tackle with ease and aplomb. For the stage show, they follow the standard Mowtown set up of lead singer, and backing singers centre stage, with a full band and horn section behind. All the members are clearly professional musicians, taking their craft seriously, but while still being able to have some fun with what they’re playing. If you want to dance to some classics, they’re definitely one to check out.
