DJ's are often perceived as 'button pressing monkeys.' No talent. Well you couldn't be more wrong with this one. James Holden has a glow about him when he spins his desks.
He plays with an electronic drum kit behind him, marinating that constant 137dsico heaven beat. There are lighting effects that play throughout the whole show, attracting all the eyes of the crowd and sending them into trance and dance. And James himself looks untouchable up there. He DJ's with such power and dynamism. He looks invincible.
The Devon DJ also studied Mathematics at Oxford University which makes him that extra bit special, an interesting character, instead of the typical DJ's that are too busy wondering where the after party is, where the girls are and are to intoxicated to even speak.
He is a hit around the globe with his next three dates stretching from Istanbul to Hague in Netherlands.
Expected more, a bit disappointed... The bass was too dominant. Sometimes, the band did not keep the rhythm. Perhaps problems with the monitor speakers?
In general, I expected more from this fusion of different styles and Instruments. Also more harmonic experiments. I had the feeling that James could get much more out of his band.
My friend recommended me to attend this gig after hearing this duet last year at some festival. I always loved Holden's dj-sets but this was completely different sound, so great. Go see them if you can!
