Gibbs' rise to success was a long time coming. Dealing drugs out of a recording studio whilst creating mixtapes that didn't seem to go anywhere, he decided to focus more on his music and try and make something of his talent. Sending a mixtape to Interscope Records, he was asked to come to Los Angeles, US, to try record a debut album. Unfortunately for Gibbs, Interscope's management changed hands and he was dropped from the label. He returned back to his hometown before being persuaded by producer Josh the Goon to give it another shot.
In 2009, he released the mixtape, "Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs," which was full of honest and gritty tales of his life and the demise of his hometown, which were received with critical success, becoming popular across various internet outlets. This was followed by "The Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik" and the 81-song mixture "The Labels Tryin' to Kill Me," with the rising fame across internet message boards prompting critics and the music industry alike to start to take notice of this rising star. The success of Gibbs showed how the internet can be a useful tool for an artist's success, outside of the mainstream avenues of record labels.
His ninth mixtape, "Cold Day In Hell" (2011) solidified his presence in the hip-hop world, bolstered by guest appearances with Young Jeezy, Juicy J, as well as the production talent of J.U.S.T.I.C.E league, Big K.R.I.T and Speakerbomb. His tenth tape, "Baby Face Killa" (2012) also featured high profile guests, including SpaceGhostPurrp, Jay Rock and Currensy.
In June, 2013, Gibbs dropped his debut album, "ESGN" which made significant waves in the US charts, reaching number 24 in the US R&B charts and number 17 in the US Rap charts. This was followed by his 2014 collaborative release with iconic underground producer, Madlib, titled "Pinãta." WIth the help of this legendary producer, Gibbs' record went to number 39 on the US Billboard Charts.

Indiana’s Freddie Gibbs’ has a voice full of what feels like real life grit and poignancy. He owns the stage and frequently flaunts his flow audaciously by having the beat cut out and proceeding to rap entire verses acapella. He is no sell out either, maintaining the powerful sense of down to earth authenticity that runs through every one of his tracks. His vocals are extraordinarily powerful and are the driving force behind so many of the songs he appears on. His recent collaboration with Madlib saw him produce the brilliant Pinata album, and he finished his show with a great live version of Thuggin’, which was received very well by his loyal fans.
Doors opened at 7 and Freddie came on at around 10:25ish. Freddie Gibbs had really high energy the entire time; he constantly came to the edge of the crowd to perform during his set. He did acapellas of verses for a lot of the songs, and his rapping is just as tight live as it is on the studio tracks. He seemed genuinely happy to be performing the entire time. His set ended after about 50 minutes.
Great show! I'll probably try to see him next time he comes to Atlanta!
So disappointing!
Did a 50 minute gig trying to impress everybody with how fast he is able to mouth words nobody was able to understand due to the poor sound quality in the otherwise cool venue. The DJ was shitty, interrupting or even stopping the music and letting Freddie do his "rapping".
What a waste of time and money, one of the worst live performances I ever witnessed!
I really like his music but better stick to listening to his songs cruising in the car.
Was just at his show last night in Cleveland

Doors opened at 730 he didnt come out till 11...they played music from 8-9 three opening acts from 9-10 30 more mins of music another opening act then 30 more mins of music...at this point i was so ready to go and Fred is a top 3 artist all time for me. He came out a little after 11 and finished at 1150ish but had to be encore twice for him to even play one to two more songs
Insane album and insane concert. Tickets were worth triple what they were on sale for. He would begin a song by killing it acapella, and then dropping the beat after a few bars making you appretiate the song so much more. 10 out of 10.
Absolutely amazing performer. Loved his set. One of the greatest acts I've ever heard. Only downside is he came on wayyyyyy too late and only played 45 minutes or so. Left me dying to hear more.
Thank god Freddie Gibbs didn't leave the GAME! A must see show, TRUE MC for anyone that has an appreciation for sharp and raw lyrics over MADLIB beats just to name a few producers
That show was Lit! My first time seeing him live. He showed Dallas a lot of love. I can't wait for him to come back to Dallas. We appreciate you out here in Dallas Gibbs.
I was right in front of him in ohio. He was Amazing l. He actually sang his songs. They werent over his voice rappers do. Id love for him to come back to pgh
Freddie Gibbs was bad ass. He murked it. The show was just way to short it seemed like it was 20 mins long. It could have been at least 45 to 1 hour long.
