C.W. Stoneking starts every performance with one key thing: a show-stopping smile. This charming Australian blues musician played at Cheltenham Jazz Festival in the UK, in May 2012, just when I was attending the whole event. I walked up to the stage where he was meant to be performing, unsure of what was about to happen, and shortly after he started playing, I knew I had definitely made the right choice in coming there.
This guy is absolutely emotional magic. He brings out so much in his playing, and his classic hits 'Jungle Blues' and 'Rich Man's Blues' reverberated around the audience. Listening to him was entirely nostalgic and full of feeling and life - it felt like hanging out on the porch on a summer evening with a cup of hot cocoa and your best friends all around you. It's very homely music, but there's so much talent behind it that you can't help but feel completely drawn into it all.
I really don't think I could have enjoyed C. W.'s performance any more, he was everything a blues singer ought to be. Charming, emotional, talented, and unafraid to improvise on the classics. An absolute joy to watch and listen to.
Good music, awesome atmosphere, everyone singing along when he started singing his Jailhouse blues alone on his guitar...
An awesome part of his concert was when, introducing a song, for a reason that escapes me, he started telling the story of how he paddled his way out of the Bermuda triangle with a ukulele. Or anything, anyway, his accent is so funny that I'd laugh to him reciting a pasta recipe, really. I'd recommend going to see him in a small venue, it's very cosy and very animated at the same time.
My first time at this venue and it was / is a cracking venue .....
That aside gentleman is a very talented musician and story teller. A great performer backed by a brilliant band . This is all glued together with him being an excellent showman and awesome stage presence (as a bonus practically a stand comedian!)
Not sure how often we'll be blessed with his presence as he hails from Australia but should you get the chance I highly recommend the experience
He is character from the past very much in touch with today! Great story teller and engages with the audience with great ease. His voice comes out effortless and the two vocalists compliment his show greatly. The whole band is well blended together, with skill and style.
He could have carried on playing for another hour and we would all still be there!
Great show!
This was an absolutely stunning show. Unfortunately, the audience could not "shut-up" during his dust-bowl ballads. It truly makes one wonder as to why these folks buy a ticket in the first place?
Great singer it was very disappointed that the band was not there as they were when he backed Queens of the stone age when he played in Adelaide last year
