‘Let it Loose’, one of The Savage’s most famous songs from back in the 80s was the track that they chose to open the show with, and it was the best decision they could have made, ad they immediately had the audience on their side, head banding and screaming away from the word go. ‘We won’t need to intimidate you, If we get a major breakthrough, So come on, let it loose’…the band repeated the opening verse over three times whilst the audience encouraged their entrance to the stage.
Half way through the song, the lyrics dropped out, as front man Chris Gent shouted over the instruments a welcome to the audience. The showcase of talent was incredible, and the instrumental solos blew me away. Lee Statham’s guitar solo was the longest and most complex I’ve ever heard, and his dedication to the performance was admirable.
The band played tracks from the entirety of their career, such as Aunt’ no Fit Place, and Cardiac, and they also played through some of the newer tracks from Sons of Malice. Towards the end of the show, they played an unreleased track, which was incredible, and it’s also great to hear that they’re still creating great music.
If you want rock you’ve come to the right place. Because Savage rock hard. You’ll probably know them best for 'Let it Loose', for it was this track, now rightly known as a classic, which made a massive dent in early 80s metal scene and was later covered by Metallica. But they’ve got a lot more in their rock arsenal than that. In 2014 Savage are still gojng strong with new members Mark Nelson and Kris Bradley augmenting the core of Chris Bradley and Andy Dawson. With the forward thrust of 2011 album Sons of Malice, Savage have returned to the festival circuit and are planning a live album entitled 'Live N Lethal'. And what a live force. Head banging, air guitar rocking anthems – full of mean grooves and blast your face off riffs. Moshpits were invented for songs like Xtreme Machine, and Let It Loose retains all its vitality years 30 years on with Bradley’s sneering vocals still hitting the mark. Gigs like the ones at Hard Rock Hell VI and a performance of the entire ‘Loose N Lethal’ album in reverse at the Headbangers Open Air Festival in 2013 revealed a powerful and intense band who still know how to put a show on.
