Absolute marvellous performance. These artists have mastered their instruments and their interaction in such a way that the music becomes 'an extension of their souls'.
Although songs are still recognisable from the cd, Mammal Hands luckily feels free to change tunes and beats where-ever they feel like.
Especially the first half of the performance was very touching; sending chills throughout the body.
The circular patterns the piano player provides gives listeners an anchor to hold onto while it frees up the drummer and the saxophone player to play 'around' the beat and the melody.
The music is complex enough for the avid jazz listener while so easy on the ears it's accessible to people who usually enjoy listening to pop songs.
The only negative comment that comes to mind is that the repetitive, circular, musical style results in a performance in which the songs are perhaps too similar. The 'free jazz'-like, absolute marvellous, section in the middle was therefore a welcome break; I just wish there would've been more.
All in all, one of the best performances I've seen in my life (and going by the audience's reaction, perhaps also theirs).
Last year I listen to the band in Rotterdam. You can really tell that the band is evolving. Also the band members are more tuned info eachother. I really liked this performance. Furthermore there are more indian elements. Recommended. The Venue was also good with respect to sound tuning and gives a good view of all artists. Venue and band recommended.
An absolutely stunning performance. Not only did their slight, live improvisation on some of their recorded music flow beautifully, but they also delved into more experimental music, which was very interesting and pleasing to listen to.
Their music really flows together to make a seamless ensemble. Amazing, definitely worth going to.
Wonderfull concert, intense and Room for improvisation. Wich lifted the concert above the high quality of the records. Fantastic and a recommendation for everyone interested in modern jazz. Mammal Hands will be a great and important band in the near future. Don’t miss it.
An excellent show by all accounts. Great music, great venue, sound and lights were good. Seeing these guys live, you see a slightly wilder side to them, with soundscapes created by the saxophonist with an array of pedals. Highly recommended
A great, intimate show for only some 70 people. Great feel, immaculate performance! Would go again!
The rest of this review is the fifteen words more that I need to write to comply with the requirements.
So nice to see how they progressed and they improved their style over only a couple of years.
The show was intense and heartfelt, and that's what makes Mammal Hands's performances great.
