In 2003, Hutchinson released his debut album ‘That Could’ve Gone Better’ via his own label Let’s Break Records, before gaining the recognition of Madonna and being signed to Maverick Records. As Hutchinson prepared to release his major-label debut, Maverick Records collapsed, and so the folk-pop artist recorded and released the E.P ‘Before I Sold Out’ on his own label in 2006, before following up with his second album ‘Sounds Like This’ in 2007; it received rave reviews from Perez Hilton, a prestigious blogger and television star, before peaking at number seven in the top 10 albums downloaded online.
Having recognized the appreciation Hutchinson’s work received, Warner Bros Records re-released ‘Sounds Like This’ in 2008. It featured the hit single ‘Rock and Roll’, which peaked at number nine in the Australian ARIA Singles Chart and number four in the New Zealand Singles chart, whilst the record also featured on the soundtrack to the film Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. In the years of 2012 and 2014, Hutchinson released two more albums - ‘Moving up, Living Down’ and ‘Pure Fiction’.
Hutchinson has taken influence from the Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Elvis Costello in his approach to music writing, and has been compared to the likes of Jason Mraz, Cat Stevens and Billy Joel. The Washingtonian is accustomed to playing the guitar and the piano, whilst he also achieved second place at the 2002 Los Angeles Songwriter’s Grand Slam. Hutchinson obtains a loyal following, having played at The Do Good Fest, whilst also performing to fans on The Ones to Watch via Skype; his material has been described as “a party in your mouth” by the Botanist.

Eric Hutchinson killed it once again in Seattle. This was my fifth trip out to see Eric in the Northwest and the first time I've seen him as an opener for another band. Even though his set was much shorter than his headlining tours, he brought the intensity I always expect of him. Mixing up his songs and adding in a lot of stage antics, his performance was spot on! He mixes his sets with a lot of his new material, but always breaks out the classics such as "Rock & Roll" and "OK, It's Alright With Me."
He started the night out with a mixed up version of "You Don't Have to Believe Me" and absolutely nailed the performance. He had the crowd in the palm of his hand. For his ending shenanigans, he got the crowd involved with their cell phones, creating a dance floor in the center of the crowd and he traveled down to dance and mix it with the locals. Seemed like everyone had a great time, and hopefully his humor, wit, and performance garnered him a lot more followers.
Along with Eric's spot on performance, it's always a major bonus to see his backing band in top form. His long time guitarist/keyboard/backing vocalist Elliot Blaufuss was amazing as always. Top musicians fill out the rest of The Believers, Leah Nobel on Bass, and Bryan Taylor on Drums.
Don't miss Eric's shows!
Perez Hilton may bash and make fun of a lot of celebrities, but he has also launched a lot of popularity for music artist who have true talent. Eric Hutchinson was one of these artists who really impressed Perez, and for good reason. The multi-talented, piano and guitar playing, singer-songwriter bleeds talent, and has a knack for radiating exuberance. When listening to his music, you can’t not be instantly put in a good mood.
I was lucky enough to see him live before he exploded in the online world, back when he was signed with Madonna’s Maverick Records before it tanked. He was still in the middle of writing and recording his album, so the show was a way for him to play and explore his music and get feedback before putting it on his “Sounds Like This” album (he eventually recorded and released this album on his own before Warner Music Group picked him up). Some of these songs were “OK, Its Alright With Me,” and “Rock and Roll,” and he would switch between playing his guitar and playing the in house piano.
He is also absolutely adorably sweet. When he plays he gets lost in his music, and will make faces when appropriate with his lyrics. He has got a contagious smile and would have small conversations in between songs.
Singer/songwriter Eric Hutchinson enjoyed a successful beginning to his career, backed originally by Madonna's record label for the release of his debut 'Sounds Like This'. Although the label unfortunately went under, he then found support from popular blog writer Perez Hilton and the album reached the top 10 in the States.
Since this his career has gone from strength to strength with a number of esteemed publications likening his multi-instrumental and vocal talents to icons including Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel. With a reputation that could precede anybody, it is clear as to why Eric's tours have been so well attended over the past years. There is no doubt he has a universal appeal with his easy listening sounds and there are a huge range of ages and people here this evening. They all applaud, cheer and sing in great force for favourites such as 'You Don't Have To Believe Me' which Hutchinson plays whilst transfixed in his personal zone. He does acknowledge the crowd when he hears the booming cheers at the finale of the show as he warmly thanks them before swiftly exiting.
This was an extremely small venue that had the feel of an underground jazz club. We got to hear Eric up close and personal in a situation where there’s no hiding any flaws or mistakes. I can tell you, this man delivers and surpasses expectations. He is endlessly talented and surprisingly funny. His show was so entertaining and he was so charming. I was already a fan and have been for over 10 years but this show reignited my enthusiasm and made me hunt down songs I haven’t heard before. It’s crazy how talented he is and, having met him afterwards, he is also incredibly nice and humble. If you do one thing for yourself, go enjoy this guy’s music live and in person.
I've been listening to EH for about 4 years, loved his music instantly. I watched youtube for some live concerts of his so thought I knew what to expect. It was even better! To top the show off I hi-fived him during the last song when he sung in the circle...I wish he'd been the headliner and I really wanted to hear "Breakdown More" but no complaints.
Eric it the best!!! We were dancing, singing, and maracin’ the maracas the whole time. He and the band were the nicest guys. Jeremy Mesersmith made us all laugh. I would definitely go to another. You should too. :)
The Kessler was the perfect venue. Humming House was such a surprise, played a tight set with great harmonies.. Eric and his fabulous band blew the roof off. Don't miss the consumate performer.
AMAZING!!! This was such a great show!! LOVE Eric and the Humming House. This is by far one of the best shows I have ever seen. The level of musical talent is mind blowing.
