Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, California, Elizabeth Harris later moved north up the coast to Portland, Oregon, and made her debut with the self-released, self-titled CD-R “Grouper” in 2005. The critically acclaimed release led Harris to sign with the independent label Free Porcupine Society. Grouper’s debut release on the label was “Way Their Crept” in 2005, which earned significant praise from portions of the musical press.
2006 brought the single “(He Knows)”, Harris’ third album “Wide”, and a collaboration with the experimental punk band Xiu Xiu entitled “Creepshow”. The single “Tried” arrived in 2007, as did the re-release of “Way Their Crept” by Type Records, followed a year later with the release of “Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill”. In 2011 Harris released the impressively ambitious double-album “A I A: Dream Loss and Alien Observer” on two vinyls, succeeded a year later by the full-length “Violet Replacement” – a pair of longform tape collage pieces. Harris supported the release with performances across the U.S., UK and Europe.
Later in 2012, in a collaboration with Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Harris released “Circular Music” – a seven hour length of music designed to represent and cover one full sleep cycle. Harris subsequently collaborated with Tiny Vipers under the moniker Mirroring on a piece entitled “Foreign Body”, with Lawrence English under the name Slow Walkers in 2013, and once again with Jefre Cantu-Ledesma to produce the record “The Event of Your Leaving”.
“The Man Who Died in His Boat”, Harris’ eighth studio album, was issued in 2013 on Kranky Records. Led by the single “Vital” the album, like many of its predecessors earned significant critical acclaim from the musical press, only bettered by Harris’ subsequent full-length “Ruins” released in 2014.
Grouper comes out on the stage with a dark stage with only one spotlight on her. She's dressed very casual, sort of grunge like. It's almost as if she is making sweet sensual love to her guitar.
The crowd is silent as all eyes are focused on her and captivated in the moment. No words are spoken, no notes are sung. There is no need, just sit back close your eyes and let the guitar take you to new realms. When she finally does sing, it's very meek and delectable.
This is the kind of concert where you can just sit back and enjoy your smokes and a nice adult beverage. I found myself completely mesmerized with every note that is played. Everyone is rocking back and fort h in their seats, each person in step with the other.
I had waited weeks for this moment. She did not disappoint. She played a medley of slow sensual songs. It's as if every song being played is directly to you, and you only. I was mesmerized in the moment, not wanting the night to end. When the night did end, I felt complete. Do yourself a favor and check her out! You will be glad you did.
