There are some acts that just have one hit wonder written all over them, and as much as I might try to do them justice otherwise, I think Eiffel 65 would have to resign themselves to the fact that, in the popular imagination, they’re known pretty much exclusively for their 1999 novelty mega-hit, ‘Blue (Da Ba Dee)’. The track went to number one across Europe, including in the UK, and hit number six on the corresponding rundown in the United States; it made a name for the Italian outfit all across the globe, but it was something they failed to properly capitalise on - their debut album, the aptly-titled Europop, was helped to multi-platinum status in the U.S. by ‘Blue’ and their Playstation tribute ‘My Console’, but the group never came close to scaling those heights again. After one more album, 2001’s Contact!, they split, but reconvened in 2010 with the initial plan of recording a new album. Various factors have conspired to stop that happening in the time that’s since elapsed, but they’ve toured extensively across Europe, with good attendances proving that a cult fanbase remains; whether they’ve got another ‘Blue’ up their sleeves, though, is another question entirely.
