I first heard about Sam and the Womp at three in the morning, stumbling upon the Polka tent at Bestival in 2009. We walked in, enticed by an unusual sound that drifted through the air, a vibrant, cheeky balkan swing and found an hour of joy. Two years later, their single "Bom Bom" became a number one hit in the UK, going on to soundtrack endless advertisements and television shows. Despite this breakout single, they have not achieved wide popularity, allowing them to retain the underground charm of their music. They continue to perform regularly, bringing their fiery swing to audiences eager to get dancing.
The trio, consisting of trumpeter Sam Ritchie, Aaron Horn on bass and Lady Oo on vocals, who is a solo performer on her own right, are joined onstage by drums and extra horns, creating a fuller sound. The Eastern European twist to their sound makes their music instantly refreshing, incorporating heavy baselines to achieve their characteristic 'womp,' reminiscent of the deep, buzzsaw bass that the likes of Rusko and Flux Pavilion made big. They make music for party people, instantly fun and impossible not to dance to. Whilst perhaps a 'one hit wonder' commercial success is not what they are about. They just want to have fun and play their music.
