Biografía
Gregory Porter was born in Los Angeles and was raised in Bakersfield, California, where his mother was a minister. A 1989 graduate of Highland High School, his path was originally leading to a career in sports after Porter gained an athletic scholarship to San Diego State University. However after incurring a shoulder injury during his junior year of high school, his football career was not to be.
Porter instead began recording music influenced by his adoration for blues, soul and gospel. His debut album 'Water' was released in 2010 via Motéma Music and gained the singer/songwriter a nomination for Best Jazz Vocal album at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards. During this time Porter was performing as part of the original Broadway cast of 'It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues'. The second album 'Be Good' was released in 2012 and following his notoriety from critics, it achieved moderate chart success across Europe. Once again critics adored Porter's blues/jazz sound and he picked up his second Grammy nomination, this time for Best Traditional R&B Performance for the album's title track.
The third album 'Liquid Spirit' was released in 2013 after he signed a contract with Blue Note Records (Universal Music Group) and was produced by Brian Bacchus. It was a huge success worldwide, charting within the top 20 of the UK album charts, top 10 in Germany and The Netherlands and cracked the top 200 in the US. This album went on to win Gregory his first Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album supporting the theory 'third time lucky'.
Críticas en vivo
I like jazz, particularly vocal jazz, but don't often get the chance to see it live. When Gregory Porter came to The Miller Center for the Arts in Reading, PA, reasonably close to where I live, some friends and I got together and decided to go see him live.
Gregory Porter has a fantastic, smooth voice, perfect for singing jazz music, and performs with a very large instrumental group so seeing him in concert is almost like seeing a symphony orchestra perform. His music is soulful, yet sedate, harmonic and relaxing.
He has, of course, the traditional jazz instrumentation like the piano, brass instruments and saxophone, but his addition of other instruments like flutes, guitars, violins and a variety of percussion give his music a fuller, more complex sound and at least for me, the vocals help to keep me engaged and punctuate the music so I notice the subtle differences in each verse, the voices of the different instruments rising up at different times throughout the song, all creating a wonderful performance well worth your time in going in person.
I would gladly take the opportunity to see Gregory Porter again in concert, and he is well deserving of the Grammy he won for best jazz vocal album.
Carré Theatre in Amsterdam is already a great start for a concert. It is intimate and has great acoustics. Add to that the - in my opinion the best pop & jazz orchestra in the world - Metropole Orkest and you have perfect conditions for a great evening. Then, Mr. Porter walks on stage and starts singing: unbelievably easy, unbelievably beautiful and with such great empathy. I have been lucky to see him perform a few times now and still every time he amazes me with his voice!
The Nat King Cole repertoire was well picked and performed beautifully. I was glad Mr. Porter decided to perform some of his own songs. We had a great evening enjoying this wonderful music. Before driving back home, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Porter and he was so kind to let us take a picture of him and me. Can't wait till North Sea Jazz in July to see him perform again.
Experience of a life time! Gregory Porter and his 4 man strong band (piano, drums, Saxophone and double bass) played an amazing concert in the beautiful and acoustically very good concert hall. Gregory Porters smooth voice and cool demeanor captivated the 2.000 strong audience from the get-go.
The concert went from memorable to unforgettable when Stevie Wonder joined the band for the Encore "Free". An overwhelming handing of the torch from one master to another. After a 10-minute jam, the audience wasn't going to leave, and Gregory Porter returned for another unscheduled encore.
Unbelievable concert. Blessed to be there.
GREGORY PORTER....WOW!
The first time I saw him at the Playboy Jazz Festival in L.A. he was good, but they cut his performance short.
I found out he was performing on his own in San Diego CA and i was eager to see him. OMG! what a gifted man he is. He as been blessed with a talent that was truly meant for him, and something we all need to hear. The awareness and spiritual message he delivers is something to savor. His 4 (yes!4)band members are equally talented as well. REAL! music is coming back. Something with substance and meaning. I'm glad to hear, see and enjoy it first hand. Keep spreading the truth GP
I'm a huge fan of Gregory Porter but had never seen him perform live. I went to the concert with high expectations, but he surpassed them all the same. It was a strangely shaped concert hall but the accoustics were excellent. The concert was simple: five musicians and their instruments. Nothing more. But when you have musicians of this calibre, that's all you need. Porter sang, the musicians played and the audience drowned in the glory of it. I will be sure not to miss Porter and his band when next they come to Europe.
What a voice, what an aura on stage! In a hot tent in midsummer with his characteristic cap, everyone was sweating and enjoying the wonderful powerful music. The sidemen were also magnificent. The acoustics were not perfect due to the location, in the beginning the piano, the bass and the sax were not well heard, but luckily this was corrected during the concert. A wonderful concert with great musicians!
Gregory didn't disapoint. From the opening he wowed the crowd. His band crackled with talent. Two horns were just mesmerising and the pianist was on his game. Bass and drums seemed to have a telepathic link, they were on it. Can't wait until he's here again and I can't wait for the new album. Gregory has the stage presence of a superstar but I bet he's an amazing guy to chat with.
When his concert started in the evening on the royal grounds of Soestdijk the rain stopped. Mr.Porter gave his best royal performance possible I think. What an amazing performance and a voice which seems so easy and powerfull to sing for him. We did enjoy the concert very much and we can recommend going to his concerts, wishing you lots of fun and enjoy.
So we went to see Gregory Porter and his band last night in Tulln, Austria - the second time we've seen him and the show was absolutely fantastic. Mr Porter's voice is as smooth as honey and just as sweet. We just hope he comes back to Vienna soon. If you get the chance go and see Gregory Porter and his band - you won't be disappointed.
I was streaming jazz and heard Gregory Porter. I also mistake this fabulous artist for another great artist. Kurt Elling. Once I heard "Water Under Bridges" I was hooked on your smooth voice.
Thank You for sharing your beautiful talents.
God Bless You and hope your tour leads you back to the SF Bay Area (home).
