The Turtles were an influential rock band from the 1960s, and they are popular for famous hits like, "Happy Together". Their live sound was influenced by the trends of the 60s, such as psychedelia and hard rock, but the band always balances their experimentation with a pop edge, and that mix allowed The Turtles to become widely influential.
The Turtles can create intense jams and soulful, melodic verses in the same song, and the song will still rule hard. The vocalist, Howard Kaylan, is known for his incredible vocal range and lyrical prowess. The Turtles were an early example of the talent that Howard possesses. The popular song "She'd Rather Be With Me " was always one song from their concert that stood out to me. The vocals seemed to have so many different meanings, and the song was so fun, and surreal. Live, the song always seemed like a dream or a memory. It was distant and psychedelic, but the pop hooks wills till get stuck in your head and will stay there for as long as you allow them.
The Turtles trippy sound is extremely eccentric, though, and often times the brilliant whimsical world will become very overwhelming, and intense, but to me, that is intentional and one of the subtle touches that made The Turtles a creative band that utilized everything that they could to add to their song writing.
You never know what antics they will do. Last year Mark came out as Adelle. This year the theme was Beauty and the Beast.Always crazy. The Archies , new to the lineup took the audience down memory lane with graftics from the cartoon show and commercials from the 60s and 70s that featured the lead singer. The Boxtops' lead singer celebrating his 70th birthday. The Association hit it out of the ballpark as always. Chuck Negron had the best vocals. More interaction with the audience than past years. The returning Cowcills told family stories.
"Happy Together 2014" concert really delivered! Headliners Flo and Eddie were hysterical as always. Mitch Ryder's voice was just like always. Gary Lewis hit on all my teen-year heart-beating faves. Mark Farner was in incredible shape, animated and energetic with all the Grand Funk hits. And, Chuck Negron did just fine without the other two "Dogs" singing all the top Three Dog Night songs. I am looking forward to "Happy Together 2015"!!
I saw the turtles in San Francisco way back in 1986. Cannot remember the venue, as so many have closed, but it a little larger than a club, and sold out. I went because I knew their chart hits, but I was amazed at their entertainment value and range. My favorite hit was 'She'd rather be with me' and they did a fantastic job with it,all the harmonies perfect. They were value for money then for sure.
