Reggae is one of those musical styles which just feels completely timeless. No matter what era it’s from, when you hear the hallmark reggae drums and off-beat chords its always going to be good vibes no matter what year it was made. Some artists, such as Protoje, are doing a great job of instilling that timeless reggae vibe into a more contemporary setting and its resulting in some really great cutting-edge Jamaican music.
For such a typically chilled genre, Protoje and his band do a great job of injecting in some real energy. As the drums build up the pace throughout the songs, jams can erupt where scratchy guitar leads mesh with the echoey piano tones to create something truly blissful. This sense of euphoria extends into the vocals which are led by Protoje’s dominant tone but as the songs pick up the pace multiple vocalists join the set creating harmonies and playful call and responses. Protoje isn’t messing with the fundamentals of the reggae sound but he is making them absolutely flourish in a contemporary live setting.
One of the greatest reggae shows i have seen in recent memory by car. Not only was Protoje himself super high energy and on point but his backing band and backup singers were legitimately amazing. The set list was an excellent mix of his most recent full length album and older tracks from earlier releases plus just a few from his newest EP. Through out the show each of the band members were able to show of their skills during solos mid track plus plenty of improvisation and audience call and response from the backup singers. Again i cannot say enough about this show. Even if you have a only a mild love of reggae music Protoje is NOT to be missed.
The Protoje concert was dope! Protoje rocked San Francisco CA and the Bay area was in the building. What a beautiful yet fun crowd,at the Independent. Protoje is true to Roots Reggae and some Hip Hop influences. The concert was sold out and the band and background singers were dope! A true blessing. Big Up! Bless up Protoje!
Priotije had an amazing energy and apart from every tune he performed being melodic and so full of rhythm he did not cut his show short. He gave his ALL. Thoroughly enjoyed last night as did my friend Anne who I invited. This is the second time I've seen him. Maria
Protoje concert was almost perfect I would have liked to hear "come my way" but he did not sing it. People who know this artist was not in number. everyone had come to see Danakil. I'd seen the atmosphere of the end. Protoje is a rising star in the world of reggae
A brilliant evening. Proteje didn't let us down, as good live as recorded, even adding his personality to his performance. Came home feeling exhausted from all the dancing but all acts were awesome. Even the 4 hour round trip to get there and back was worth it!!
Great sound, great show, great energy, and a great set. The band was excited by the reception they got and put on an awesome performance. The whole group was extremely talented. The opening band Rising Buffalo Tribe did a good job getting the crowd going too.
Show was awesome, largest ever pay crowd for reggae artist in nyc, in my opinion. Great show. Chronixx close it well.i will certainly attend a second show . The vybz , the people, the bands and artist were awesome.
