Biografía
Nicknamed “Little JB” due to his resemblance to James Brown in both looks and vocal style, Lee Fields is one of the most respected figures in soul music, one who recorded and released his first single at the tender age of 18 and hasn’t looked back to this very day. Throughout the 1970’s he was a cult hero who never hit it big but was hugely acclaimed by all those who knew him, however, that’s not quite enough to show for a decade’s worth of toil and he took most of the 1980’s off from music. Unbeknownst to him however, his work was being exposed to a whole new audience of young people during his time off. He might not have been creating music during the decade, but in a move that almost seems too good to be true; his music went through something of a renaissance due to it being discovered by the early generations of hip-hop producers.
In the pre-internet era, beat makers had to trawl through record shops seeking out classic soul and funk tracks to sample, and his music was discovered by many artists of the day impressed by the sheer force of his music. His career gained a much needed second wind as a result, and he mounted a comeback in the 1990’s.This came to a head when he signed to Desco Records later in the decade and released the barnstorming funk album “Let’s Get A Groove On”. Ever since then, him and his backing band The Expressions have continued to record and release acclaimed studio albums and play awe-inspiring live shows all over the world. He’s one of the unsung heroes of rhythm and blues, and for that, Lee Fields comes highly recommended.

Nicknamed Little JB after bearing similar resemblances in mannerisms and vocal style to the Godfather of Soul, Lee Fields has forged a successful career spanning over 43 years. Starting his career when the genre R&B was in its early days, Fields has worked tirelessly to create his prolific and incredible back catalogue of hits meandering through soul, jazz, blues and funk. Having performed with some of the greatest acts of those genres such as: Kool and the Gang, Little Royal and O.V. Wright has reaffirmed his stature as a living legend. At 61 years of age whilst most are thinking of retirement, Fields is ready and raring to go as he teams up with the musicians known as The Expressions to form his new project Lee Fields & the Expressions. While new artists are trying to emulate and capture the authenticity of the soul era, JB and The Expressions are moving forward trying to modernise and evolve the genre to make it appealing in the here and now. Fields’ raw and powerful vocals combined with the tight musicianship of The Expressions creates this fresh exciting and rejuvenated sound of soul. It’s music that makes you feel and come alive, while at the same time warms your heart. The audience are mesmerised by the raw emotions being laid on the table as they sway from side to side while cheering. Lee Field’s courage and ingenuity alone should be praised for this musical delight. Lee Fields & the Expressions encapsulate everything that contemporary soul music should be.
Lee Fields and the Expressions is the BEST concert experience you could ask for. Accompanied by phenomenal musicians, Lee Fields, who is a true entertainer, and great vocalist-with an unmatched stage presence that lets you get into the experience. From the time he gets in the stage, it is as if he is singing directly to you! When it's over ( and you usually don't want it to end), you leave wanting to know when they will be back. AWESOME!
Lee Fields amd The Expressions are absolutly incredible. I have been to there shows in san francisco at the fillmore, at the brick amd mortar music hall and now at the mezzanine and it is always, imean ALWAYS soul fulfilling. Mr. Fields is an awesome performer and a great singer. The bamd The Expressions expresses their raw talent through music and instruments. Together they are absolutely incredible.
Lee Fields is one of the truest soul's out there and it reflects in everything he does. If you don't have My World yet, it's a staple for us around our house and the live show is everything it should be. Do yourself a favor and check his label out Truth and Soul as well has his live shows. Great guy, killer band, and nothing but love and passion from these cats.
You must see it to feel it. His energy does not cone as a strong as his live performance. A fantastic artist with a great support band. The intimate venue is also a bonus. If you wish you had seen James Brown, go and see Lee Fields, even though he has his own style, his own legacy. He will make you happy.
I love Lee Fields, he's one of the best performers going. Its the second time I've seen him and it was just as good. Gorilla isn't the best venue, I think they let too many people in to be honest everyone was in each others way. other then that it was amazing,
Not the best turnout but my god what a voice and what a band. One of those moments in life where you feel blessed to be present!
The benefit of not many people being there, it was like a personal performance for me and my friends.
Unforgettable.
Amazing! Sounds SO good live, great atmosphere, band were great too. Wished hed played a bit more of his older stuff or just had a longer set to play them all. First time seeing Lee Fields and I had such a good time. Just all round G-R-E-A-T
Awesome show! 2nd time I have seen Lee Fields in Toronto and he has yet to let me down! The band is tight and Lee can really belt out the notes. Would highly recommend seeing him live if you have yet too. He does not disappoint.
