Like a blast from the past, Pokey LaFarge’s onstage persona lives up to his southern, bluesy musical style. In a crisp, pin-striped suit and perfectly coiffed, slicked back side-part, Pokey LaFarge emanates the distinctly 1940’s feel of a truly classic performer, despite being only 31 years old. Everything from his facial inflections, to his subtle foot tapping, to his short-strapped acoustic guitar, prove LaFarge’s unfaltering commitment to the genre and obvious influences from old favourites like Howlin’ Wolf and Jimmie Rogers.
His pre-fame experiences performing on street corners inflect that genuine flair of authenticity and gratitude that someone with a belief and talent for their own creative art must commit to in order to be successful. Having finally hooked up with his band in 2009– who were originally called The South City Three– Pokey and gang caught their big break opening for Jack White on the North American leg of his tour in 2012.
Travelling with a 5-piece band that includes bass, guitar, harmonica, washboard, clarinet, cornet, trombone and saxophone, LaFarge’s efforts are not to be outshined by his equally enthusiastic and talented band, including members Joey Glynn, Adam Hoskins, Ryan Koenig, TJ Muller and Chloe Feoranzo. Hitting up anything from small, intimate venues, to taking the big stage at festivals, Pokey LaFarge’s live performances offer what is undoubtedly a trip back in time.
This was my first time seeing Pokey live, but I cannot recommend him in concert more. Not only is he a nice and funny guy in person, but the energy he brings to the stage is unparalleled. He and the South City Three are incredibly talented.
During this show, Pokey actually broke a string and had to go backstage to fix it. The South City Three and the rest of the band covered for him for 4 songs, and did a great job doing it. When Pokey returned, he made a few jokes, and the show went on.
The concert was also well worth it--Pokey played for about 2 hours basically nonstop. They did a couple of covers but everything else was original music, including one new work-in-progress song.
Everything about the concert was great except the Continental Club, who posted that the doors opened at 7:00. Everyone showed up around 6:30 to wait in line, but the doors didn't open until 8:15 or so.
If you get the chance, definitely see Pokey live. You won't regret it.
Pokey La Farge and his band are a sensation. I have never seen a musician work so hard and put so much into a memorable performance before.
Right from the start you know you are in for a good time, the band playing tight and Pokey in the centre, ring master, master of ceremonies, highlighting all the excellent players, drawing your attension to them and fully sharing the limelight.
Later Pokey was to join the audience on more than one occasion becoming one of the crazed crowd.
This kind of personal interaction and the respect and recognition he shows to his fans wins him the kudos he and the band so richly deserve.
You want style? You have it.
You want fun? You get it.
You want great music played with skill and passion? You have that too.
A night with Pokey and the band is a night you will never forget. Go see them soon. Chris
I saw Pokey & the band at the Kessler Theater in Dallas. The guys put on a great show. The band (drums, bass, 2 guitars) are all excellent musicians, they play with a lot of energy and they are very tight. They seemed to really get into the songs and the show.
Pokey did the singing, and his voice sounded fabulous! He is able to put strength and volume into the rocking upbeat tunes, but also bring it down to a gentle sound for several songs he did solo with his guitar.
He came out into the audience for one of the solo's, the crowd opened up around him in a circle, created a very intimate atmosphere.
I think the venue really fit the band and it's music. The Kessler has some of the best acoustics anywhere & Pokey and the band really filled the room with great music.
Anxiously awaiting his return!
Fabulous fun. Excellent crowd, excellent entertainer, excellent musicians, excellent music. Lived up to expectations. Wonderful encore too. Pokey crowd surfed. Set list was expansive. Instrumental solos were abundant and classy. Would highly recommend to broad audience. My adolescent son and grey haired folks jamming side by side.
The band is in sync and is extremely talented. You get a lot from this band from jazz, swing, blues, and country. Pokey is extremely engaging as well. I don't care what you listen too,you can't go wrong by going to watch this band play. I will definitely go see them again and again.

Pokey Lafarge solo: absolutely fantastic! A truly great artist
Even without his band it was a perfect show. Just him with his guitar on the stage having a good evening.
