Biografía
A cool combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz and rhythm and blues, the band has a very chilled out style that is addictive as it is compelling. The band originated merely as an excuse for the members to jam together whilst working in other bands. However, in 1999 the band became each member’s sole focus as they realised the enormous potential of the band. Chris Faiumu can be cited as being the founder of the band and is a remaining member today, along with musicians Dallas Tamaira, Toby Laing, Scott Towers, Tehimana Kerr, Iain Gordon and Joe Lindsay.
The band’s most famous single is ‘Midnight Marauders’ which was released in 2002, earned them international recognition and was their real rising point in the industry. Enormously successful in New Zealand, the band has released three studio albums, two live albums and several singles as of 2014. Their second album ‘Based on a True Story’ is arguably their most successful and garnered them several awards and nominations including Album of the Year and Highest Selling NZ Album at the RIANZ New Zeakand Music Awards. Their third album, ‘Dr Boondigga and the Big BW’ also won them Album of the Year at the award show in 2009.

Fat Freddie's Drop combines soulful jazz components with electronica and strong reggae undertones. They have a great live performance often including theatrics and dramatic lighting effects. They accent their casual style of clothing with sunglasses and sharp jackets giving them a classy appearance.
While performing they often introduce new solos and rifts to songs extended the length by sometimes double and bring a kind of energy to the audience that few artists can match. Audiences can't help but rock out to their smooth beats and catchy rhythms delivered with showman style.
Recently Fat Freddie's Drop filmed a two hour live performance at the Village Underground even streaming the set live around the world. The club has a dark mysterious atmosphere that compliments the band members mysterious presences. The opening song 'Blackbird' has become one of their best hit's and recordings of the performance can still be found online. The band excels at delivering a dramatic performance with the high sound quality to match.
This is one of the few artists that somehow sound more magical when their live. All seven of Fat Freddie's Drop band members toured Europe in 2008 when they first got critical exposure to success bringing them to the forefront of the 'jazz/blues/techno' Jam Band movement and the world got to know them for delivering exceptional live performances.
New Zealand seven piece Fat Freddy's Drop have a huge reputation around the globe as they expertly mix genres including dub, reggae, soul, jazz and electro into an overall innovative and interesting dub-dance sound. Originally beginning as a jam outfit, this group is incredibly smooth onstage as they come out dressed well and carrying their extensive array of instruments with them. The crowd instantly begins to cheer and you have this feeling that the show is going to be enjoyed massively by all involved parties.
There is almost no surety to what the band will play tonight as with their global reputation comes an inherent knowledge of their improvisational habits and new versions of album tracks that make them barely recognisable. The audience seems to be happy tonight with the songs selected from across the three studio releases and the live albums as they clap, dance and sing along whilst Dallas Tamaira or Joe Dukie charms the crowd all throughout the show. It is the huge crescendo of 'Shiverman' that leaves the best and most lasting impression on the audience tonight and the bellowed praise and applause are well received.
For someone who has literally only heard half of one song and who was at the show/Melbourne for a family gath - I loved it! The Forum was a fantastic venue and the band was great - especially the potbellied dude in white... very entertaining haha. I was dragged to the very front by some random groupie and I literally danced the night away - my boys were like “mum, the whole point of coming to Melbourne was to see FFD and you weren’t even with us”. My son was slightly disappointed they didn’t play their more ‘upbeat’ music, but in light of the fact we were at the last of their three shows, on the weekend of the tragic NZ shootings by that despicable Australian, I think it was understandable. But... nevertheless - I’d see them again... if only I knew they were playing at WOMAD the weekend before, I could’ve saved an airfare lol!
I'm really not a fan of the Brixton Academy - been to too many oversold gigs, and the sound is patchy - but I made an exception for Fat Freddy's Drop because they always blow the roof off. Their show has matured over the years and what was a dub/reggae slow form jam is now a punchy house oriented groove fest with a tight horn section and energy in spades. Live, they're a fun band, you can soak up the atmosphere in the room and leave feeling very happy indeed. So grateful that they tour to the UK regularly, next year I'll make an effort to see them outside of London.
What a concert!!! We've seen them before so expectations were high, very high! We brought a FFD novice, never heard them before, but a regular concert and party guest. She said that she had never been to such a FANTASTIC concert/party, and I fully agree. My feet are sore, my arms are sore, from dancing, hopping, clapping through the whole concert ... me, I'm 55 years old, but I felt like 25, now as 80, but if I could get a ticket for the next concert I would be 25 again, dancing, hopping, clapping through the whole concert, again.
The best live band ever!!!
Fat Freddy's Drop is one of the best live bands i have ever seen. Great Sound perfect timing and a good show. Only the venue "Palladium" is not good for concerts. The accustic is poor and you can't see anything of the band when you stand down in the back of the hall because the stage is very low.
This was my second Fat Freddy's gig - and it will be definitely not my last :-)
Fat Freddy's Drop's was the best concert I've been to in the past years without a doubt. I had so see them live in Soundwave Croatia this summer, but unfortunately the concert got cancelled - the disappointment was completely gone after they started playing the other day. Can't wait to see them again!
GReat venue awesome band :-) x travelled all the way from the UK to see them not disappointed wine not bad either would highly recommend this venue to friends and family. Very well organised all staff very friendly and the sercurity made by day by asking for ID b4 even letting me in the bar line!!
OFF! THE! CHAIN!
Fat Freddy's drop never disappoint. This is the third time seeing them and by far the biggest crowd and best performance. The atmosphere was pumping all night long! One of the best gigs I've been to in a long time, if not the best!
