Biografía
Influenced by a wide-spectrum of musical genres from the 1950’s rock and roll of Buddy Holly, to the ’70’s punk rock and ’80’s hip-hop, JD McPherson first began playing guitar at the age of 13. During high school the young musician played in a number of local punk bands and began crafting his own rock and roll songs. McPherson subsequently performed in the groups the Poison Okies and the Starkweather Boys, before beginning his studies at the University of Tulsa. After graduating with a degree in fine arts, and a short spell as an art and technology teacher, the singer-songwriter sent a demo to Hi-Style Records’ exec Jimmy Sutton.
McPherson later signed with Hi-Style Records who issued his debut full-length “Signs and Signifiers” in 2010. The album highlighted the singer-songwriter’s vintage sounding blues-rock, charted at No. 161 on the Billboard 200 upon its major-label rerelease in 2012, and won the 2012 Independent Music Award for Best Rock Album. Later in 2012 McPherson released the single “Your Love (All That I’m Missing)”, and was dubbed as an “Artist to Watch” by Rolling Stone Magazine. The musician was subsequently invited to tour alongside Nick Lowe on his tour of America’s West Coast.
The EP “The Warm Covers”, featuring McPherson’s take on songs by Billy Boy Arnold and Lowe, was issued in 2014, before he returned to the studio to focus on his follow-up album. “Let the Good Times Roll”, produced by Mark Neil, was released in February 2015, charting at No. 142 on the Billboard 200.

It is great to see modern artists taking genres back to their roots and becoming inspired by the classic and retro sounds of the 50s and 60s. Oklahoma singer/songwriter JD McPherson is definitely one of these artists as he crafts a wonderful blues rock sound that is revered for its neo-classic qualities.
His debut album was only released in 2012 yet in that time he has amassed a cult like following on both sides of the Atlantic for his easy listening vibes. The live show is now a slick operation with a number of accompanying musicians yet JD is still very much the focal as he sits centerstage with his trusty acoustic. It is a skill that despite not having achieved commercial success, he holds the crowd's attention for a twenty song set simply due to the high quality of his music and brilliant performance style. He holds himself as an endearing and honest frontman throughout and every rapturous applause and bold cheer from the crowd has been truly earned this evening.
With a blues heart straight from Oklahoma, JD McPherson is a blessing from the blues God.
Take a look at his performance for KEXP back in 2012. I know it's perhaps dated, but it shows JD, Jonathon David McPherson, in his natural vibe. The double bass brings a funky jazz swing to it all, contrasting to JD singing 'I'm nothing but a country boy.' His music derives from the essence of popular music today: blues, jazz, country and classic rock n roll. JD is the perfect example of a rockabilly. Although stating that his music is old school, JD admits that he takes inspiration from various artists including Wu-Tang Clan and Pixies.
I admit I can't quite see the links myself but inspiration comes in all different types of forms. Whatever his inspiration is, JD produces faultless country rock music. He has a couple of shows commencing soon which could be paving way to the start of new material and a new record. Let's hope.
This was my second time seeing JD live. So glad I've been introduced to his music. The crowd was excited, even for a Sunday night, and ready to dance. The band kept up a lively tempo and only slowed it down for a few songs, including one of my all time favorites: Gentle Awakening. So happy to have heard that live. They came out for a three song encore to close the evening. Kicking off with North Side Gal. I will definitely be catching him again if he swings back around!
I would definitely say that JD McPherson has restored my faith in a good ole' fashioned, rock and roll show. It's what i've been craving for a very long time in the music industry and it's been lacking. The show at Abilenes was small but fantastic in the same tradition of the Cavern club in Liverpool. It's the kind of show that will leave you wanting more and a few pounds in sweat lighter. Thanks for a grand night out of dancing.
Simply put, one of the best rock n' roll shows left on planet Earth. MUST SEE.

Electric. Not what you expect in the best way. JD keeps it real and sounds even better live, if that's possible. His line up included the title track off his newest album and he ended his encore with North Side Gal. The band is phenomenal and they pick up multiple instruments as they go. His groove is something to live for and you have to put seeing him live at the top of your list!
Awesome!!! As good as I could hope for. Jammed tough for a small band. Performance was right there with Gary Clark Jr and Brian Setzer. Played all their hits and then some. Great show!!!' Can't believe this guy isn't famous yet! Definitely recommend everyone see this guy and his band if you get a chance. Will not be disappointed!!!
Went to Electric rooms camden last nite .The show was electric as usual J.D Mcpherson was amazing ! Heard bad reports about venue but I loved it atmosphere was great .Lighting ,staff all was great !.J.D did all the hits and more !place was rockin .I'll definitely be booking to see him for the 4th time !
Absolutely fantastic! They really played well and wholeheartedly. I loved that the 2nd guitarist switched to tenor Sax at times , changing the sound more towards Bill Hayley ! Those who didn't go (but perhaps would have) because of the snow simply made the wrong decision and really missed out .
