She may have been sporting tracksuits, baring her midriff and singing “zig ah zig ah,” but Melanie C is definitely more than just a Spice Girl.
Classically trained, the Merseyside singer got her start in the Spice Girls in 1994. Once they released ‘Wannabe,’ the track and the group’s first album catapulted them to worldwide domination -- of the pop world at least. There wasn’t a billboard, magazine or even lollipop where you couldn’t find Sporty Spice and the rest of the girls plastered all over it. However after the departure of, Geri Halliwell during the time the Spice Girls were working on their third album, Melanie started to look at her options and kicked off her own solo career. She’s since released six albums and headlined nine tours since go on her own.
Seeing her perform with the Spice Girls and solo are two different experiences. While both are fun and get you up on your feet, there’s a strength that she exudes more when she’s performing by herself. Unlike her time singing as Sporty Spice, Melanie, the solo artist, is a bit more authentic, honest and easier to relate to -- even if some of the tracks are electronic dance tracks. Regardless of what beat or melody she’s singing to her, there is a vulnerability and rawness to her performance that quickly connects to the crowd. But no matter where she plays or what persona Melanie is giving off onstage, one thing is for sure -- she’s got a set of pipes that will blow you away each time.
We really enjoyed this gig. At first I thought her on stage antics were a bit too dramatic and unnecessary. As the gig really got going it all fell into place. She can really chant and had good rapport with her crowd.
I like her new sound and her new album is excellent. I love that she played some of her classics and even gave the crowd a solo performance of a Spice Girls hit...much better than the original in my humble opinion.
ABC Glasgow is a great venue for her style. Loved her set list, loved her encore and thought it an excellent gig.
Melanie C is brilliant on the stage! If you never see her live, you must do it! Her brand new tour 'Version of Me' is one of the best of her stunning career. I follow her since Spice Girls' ages but now she is more confident and she is sounding completely amazing, her voice is so powerful! Her new band is absolutely fabulous, giving her a new and fresh sound. Seeing her at Shepherd's Bush Empire, in London, is always massive but this time was epic. Cannot wait for next concerts!
Sorry Mel. If you are going to do a show and charge money you need to know the words. You've sold 100million albums. I'd be fired from my job if I was that unprepared. Forgot the words (admittedly) on the second song and read the teleprompter on the next two. I'm not a "hater" and was quite excited to see you and taxied a ways to see show.... but left early.
She's great! Strong, confident vocal, the sea of emotions. The songs are catchy, the lyrics are wise, touching and very personal but there are many who can identify with them. I only wish she wasn't such a perfectionist and let herself go a little bit more, was more spontaneous. After all these years she has nothing to prove!
I cant say anything negative about the show, i really love it, and love her. Buuuut... the hour and half waiting was unrespectful, considering the first show in Santiago. Not being enough, the show was only 50min longer... for the same price, i saw Ariana Grande in a 2 hours show.
