Biografía
Saschah Ring regards the move he made from his native Quedlinburg to the German capital of Berlin in 1997 as the most important decision of his life, not to mention his best. While he’d made some headway into the nascent techno scene of East Germany, Ring was still frustrated and wanted to seek out something far bigger and better. He found exactly that in Berlin, where he was exposed to sounds and styles that took him far out of his comfort zone. For one, Ring began composing music away from the computers that he’d cut his teeth creating his first compositions on, learning to play the keyboards, guitar and drums in short order. Within two years of moving to Berlin, Ring had made enough of a name for himself to begin running the record label Shitkatapult along with the label’s co-founder Marcus Haas, and it was on that label that he began to release his first true records, taking the stage name Apparat.
In 2001 he released his first single “Algorythm” and followed that up with his debut album “Multifunktionsebene” in the same year. Almost immediately his work was met with critical acclaim, and throughout the rest of the decade his music appeared not on the charts but everywhere else that counts. From a Peel session he performed in 2004, to support slots with Radiohead themselves he performed with the side-project that he formed with Modeselektor, Moderat, and in the final scene of Breaking Bad’s fourth season. While he made his name with dance-floor oriented techno, he’s branched out more recently to make genuinely mind-expanding ambient music, and for the mastery he has over both kinds of electronica, Apparat comes highly recommended.

Apparat, aka Berlin’s Sascha Ring, is one of my favourite electronic artists, whether his is in DJ ‘rave’ mode, fronting his Apparat ‘band’, or performing live alongside Modeselektor as part of Moderat. I have seen all of his projects live and I honestly couldn’t pick out my favourite show, as each one has been so individual and special. The first time I saw him was when he was DJing at the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre in London. Here he delivered a thumping electro set backed by provocative visuals. I also saw him do a DJ set supporting Modeselektor at the Roundhouse in London and this time it was a near beat-less set full of orchestral minimal techno. Stunning. However, Apparat only became one of my favourites after I witnessed his full band show, in which he sings, plays the guitar and programmes beats while other musicians flesh out his compositions. This music was nothing short of beautiful, particularly the post-electronica of ‘Ask/Black Veil’, with Sascha Ring’s haunting, Thom Yorke-esque falsetto and the building euphoria of the soundcapes. Whether he is DJing or performing with a band, Apparat always drop in a version of Moderat’s anthemic ‘Rusty Nails’, which has got to be one of the best melodic techno songs of all time…
Although Sascha Ring has a pretty awesome name already, he performs under the psuedonym of Apparat. The German electro musician has found his niche in minimalistic, trance beats after moving away from the dance floor techno he began to create at the beginning of his career. Almost twenty years into his career now, Sascha has an upper hand on some of the younger artists breaking through onto the scene. Although the new electro musicians may offer something new, you only gain experience with crowds through hard graft and relentless touring commitments.
Playing at some of the world's most prolific dance events, he does not have a particularly euphoric live show yet it is intelligently put together and the deep trance beats pulsate through the ground and lure the revellers of the site into the tent. Stepping into Apparat's surreal and hazy world, you are treated to some of the highest quality minimalstic beats and although they are not dance floor orientated, it does keep the audience moving and above all engaged thanks to the enthralling visuals and ever changing sonar structures.
Hands down the best concert I've ever been at.
You don't always see 2 standing ovations and 2 minutes of applauses at the end of a concert.
The gig took place at the Barbican Theatre in London, and both music and live video were masterfully tailored for such an occasion.
In order to have an idea of what you can expect from an Apparat concert in a Theatre, you should listen to "Krieg und Frieden" and "The Devil's Walk" albums, which contain many tracks I've heard live.
10/10
Amazing performance! Seeing Apparat Band performance makes you realize that electronic-created music can warmth your heart when is played by instruments.
Sascha is just an amazing musician, his voice on the concert was just simply better than the studio and the instruments sounds are really well equalized.
Visuals are just en expression of minimalism and beautyness, perfectly synchronized with music and lyrics.
Stunning show. Never forget. Amazing sound (hands down to the venue and sound technicians), but the music itself and the energy with which it is performed is indescribable, each of the band members has a uniquely powerful stage presence and everyone puts their all into the music, creating a guttural synergy which seeps into every pore. Beautiful stage visuals too, I so want to see Apparat live again and again!
I am a huge fan of Apparat and when i read that he was going to perform i was thrilled. However, this performance was simply a DJ set, and so he did not perform any of the music that is usually associated with the artist name Apparat. It was a good night, but disappointing if you thought you were going to hear Apparat.
Absolutely great. Our 4th concert over 8 years and every time a great experience. The best live band we know. (Apart from really genuine music.)
Totally amazing the perfection to which they coordinate pretty complex rhythm.
Apparat and his band are real masters in what they do. It almost feels like they breathe music, connecting with each other through the experimental sounds & together creating harmony!
Very clear sound and good light show
It was amazing! The sound was perfect and Apparat is one of the best musician I've ever seen.
The Ancien Belgique was very well organized and there was space for the crowd.
Thanks
