As it stands, forms of American folk music from bluegrass to Americana to more straightforward singer songwriter sounds are some of the most successful and relevant forms of pop music in the western world. Your mileage may vary on whether this is a good thing or not but one of the ways that acoustic music could stay on top of the world for years to come is by having some diversity in there, the States aren’t the only country in the world to have acoustic music with roots in their native culture. The music of Argentine-American Kevin Johansen is an astounding example of how Latin music can be made accessible and fun for other audiences without watering down any of its roots and the best way of experiencing in general is live. Johansen is a consummate entertainer, never anything less than charming, charismatic and on top-notch form as a singer both in English and Spanish. This is all done as he switches from playing the guitar, the ukulele and the banjo from song to song all the while and it never interrupts his shows laidback, intimate feel. It’s not pulse pumping entertainment, but it never needs to be. It’s still a fantastic way to spend an evening and a glimpse into what could be a far more interesting musical landscape than we have now. Highly recommended.
Good show. Small venue with an enthusiastic crowd. KJ was enjoying himself and smiled the whole time. At least 3 times he invited members from the crowd onto the stage to dance which was pretty cool. The dude doesn't look like a 53 year old.
