There are certainly some artists who are just synonymous with a certain era; in Paul Young’s case, that time period is the eighties, when he was such a prominent pop star that he was afforded the genuine honour of being the first vocalist on the original Band Aid track, singing the first two iconic lines. He’s not to be confused, of course, with Paul Young of Sad Cafe, who was less commercially successful but arguably favoured by the critics; not that it should bother the first Young too much, of course, because he had quite the career back in his heyday. He hasn’t released any new records since 2006’s Rock Swings - On the Wild Side of Swing, but that isn’t to say that he hasn’t continued to tour; that’s actually been his bread and butter more recently, with only sporadic albums being dropped during the nineties. He continues to play in the UK on a semi-frequent basis, bringing a full live band with him and performing classic hits like ‘Love of the Common People’, ‘Come On and Stay’ and ‘Wherever I Lay My Hat’; that he can still pack out intimate rooms is testament to his eighties success and his enduring popularity.
Excellent show! Great band, a good selection of lively songs and the charm and charisma of Paul Young... Jamie Moses on guitar is a real talent, very impressive. The backing singers were vibrant and really played their part. The show was a representation of the album No Parlez in the first part then a selection of new and old songs to singalong and dance too... The Aylesbury waterside theatre is an excellent location for acoustics and vision.. Unfortunately there were not many people on their feet dancing and even some grumpy ones who moaned at us that couldn't keep out bums on seats for some songs... Overall really entertaining show with fantastic band!
Terrible show. I was really looking forward to it, but his voice was so poor. He murdered Wherever I lay my hat (song #4) and I was tempted to leave then. I stayed to the bitter end, but I noticed plenty of others leaving before the end. At times I looked at the people with me and we exchanged facial expressions that were a mix of surprise and embarrassment for him. There was very little atmosphere, about 10 people got up and danced and everyone else sat and gave muted applause after each song. I probably go to 30+ gigs a year and this was the worst I have seen for a very long time
Enjoyed Paul Young's music since the mid eighties, and finally got to see him for the first time. He was part of the Retro Futura 2017, on their Dallas stop. My wife and daughter enjoyed the show too. Paul's part of the show was great, he still has a great voice and stage presence, and funny to boot. His set was short, understandably, because it was 6 acts. But they were his goodies.
Wouldn't mind seeing again in the future, given the chance. My wife and daughter would agree.
What a fantastic night! Paul put on a great show! His stage presence was amazing. Took me back to my teenage years especially when I actually got to meet him! He was so nice. I had photos taken with him and he even signed my original 1983 No Parlez vinyl! And of course I had to sneak in a quick kiss! Was an experience I will remember and treasure forever. Waited 35 years for this moment and it was certainly worth it. Thank you Paul xx
I have been a huge fan of Paul Young since hearing No Parlez in 1983. Since there were 5 other performers on the bill, he was only able to sing 4 songs: Some People, Tear Your Playhouse Down, Every Time You Go Away, and Come Back and Stay, but he did a great job and I would definitely go see him again, preferably headlining the bill, so he could sing more songs.
WTF was this???!?!!
Paul Young, maybe but NOT the Paul Young. This was some of the worst music I have heard EVER and the guy who was called Paul Young was NOT the one we all know and love. Some Joe Bloggs playing a bass and harmonica. What a waste of a tenner and a night out!
Great to see Paul Young in concert. Although his voice had changed a lot since he was this big popstar in the 80's and 90's, his soulfull input in his singing and performaning are classy. It is a perfect way to re-listen to his great songs, old and new.
Paul Young forever the smoothie & belted out all the hits Every Time You Go Away, Everything Must Change, Come Back and Stay, Wherever I Lay My Hat. A great gig at the manchester arena to support the mighty cher who was outstanding.
