Listening to live musicians who are masters at many different instruments is something that really appeals to me, and so watching Dorian Concept play his way through his set on the keyboard, guitar, and using his own vocals was incredible. He mostly focused on his piano work, and his years of jazz training were noticeable and transferable to his modernised funk and hip hop electronic sound. I’m also a great fan of Flying Lotus, and as Concept is they’re part time keyboard player, I was even more interested in seeing him play live.
He opened the show with his debut EP, 2 Feet For You, and had the audience on his side straight away. Everyone was cheering along, and he had a microphone through which he was shouting for us all to join in with him. He played a really good selection of electronic tracks, and some more classical jazz remixes, as well as playing tracks from his new album, Joined Ends. To keep us all energised, he played a couple of his remixes, and got us singing along with him for tracks like Clifford Gilberto’s Deliver The Weird.
He was great at maintaining his energy throughout the show, and it passed so quickly. It was a shame he couldn’t play for longer, but he’s incredibly talented and put on a great performance.
