For a 31 year old piano player he is pretty amazing. Oh... that is a typo. He is 13, not 31.
I feel I have something in common with Joey other than we share the same June 25th birthday with US Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the love of great jazz. One big difference is that he can play it as well as anyone I have ever heard. I can just enjoy it.
Joey's trio's first night at Jazz Alley in Seattle was excellent with a variety of tunes including a yet unnamed original he said he might call "Seattle". He is comfortable, confident and articulate in his playing and at time stood in front of his piano bench to play.
While the 80 minute set seemed shot in jazz concert circles it was just fine for the audience that seemed to enjoy every minute of it.
It was an absolute joy to watch Joey perform last night - at the Broad in Santa Monica - at a level only reserved for seasoned and mature jazz musicians. I dare compare his technical skills and speed on the piano to Oscar Peterson, the great jazz pianist. His rhythmic session was of bass and drums was also fantastic. I look forward to seeing more of Joey whenever he’s in town. By the way, I had the great honor to meet his parents and great uncle. Such an unassuming and humble family. They’re a class act and Joey must be blessed to have them on his team.
What a magical night!!! His talent is amazing and to think that he is a self taught 11 year old?!? IF you believe in reincarnation you'll be certain to think that this is one of the greats back in a young boy's body. The other Trio members-- Bassist Dan Chmielinski and Drummer Sammy Miller are both supremely talented as well. The music was about as perfect as you could possibly want. Go see if you can-- sold out last night-- sold out in LA-- if they are coming to you-- snag your tickets and enjoy the ride
Fabulous performance! We
had seen him on 60 Minutes and went to Newport Jazz Festival 2 summers ago to see him. ONLY problem- there were only about 25% of the 1,000 seats taken! I saw earlier that 11,500 people had inquired about the $15 and $20 tickets, so we figured it would be sold out. So sad that the other 750 people that could have seen him didn’t. In Nashville tickets are priced from $38 to $243, so our budget loved this venue!
I’ve been going to jazz clubs and festivals since the 70’s. I can easily say that the Joey Alexander with strings concert last night was one of the best performances I’ve been fortunate enough to attend. The passion, energy, joy and talent was incomparable. Hopefully this combination of Joey’s trio and 20 magnificent string players was not a one-off. The rendition of “Peace” was especially moving.
I have enjoyed attending many of Joey's concerts and each time, I enjoy his performance so much more. Joey seems more relaxed and simply relishing in his music. His back bass and drummer were fantastic! The Cabot theater is a nice venue and the sound was very good. Joey never disappoints in his performance. I look forward to another concert soon!
Very good concert, a young prodique, a future maestro, the spectators can't do nothing but amaze. Shy and humble but give directions to his two musicians, he was unfortunately the youngest person in the concert hall. The brightest future shines above him. A concert that should NOT to be missed.
That was an absolute
outstanding, jaw dropping performance a highlight of the year and will be one of unforgettable events for me.
Also, his availability after the concert was delightful….. such a bonus….and he is only 12 years old!!!!! Amazing…
Thank You

What a great performance by this young musician. He has a nice sense of humor and is a master, already, at his art.
The venue, Musical Instrument Museum, in Phoenix, Arizona was a wonderful experience. Very good acoustics and small, intimate seating.
