This Town Need Guns could be described as a lesser success story of the Oxford underground rock scene. It is difficult not to compare them to Foals, forming in 2004 with their own version of math rock, the band went on to release their debut LP 'Animals' in 2008, and although it was adored by critics, it didn't reach the dizzying successes of their peers' release 'Antidotes'.
Similar in origin, yet not in sound, Stuart Smith forged a rock inspired sound that blended funk and math pop effortlessly into their first album and this weird sound soon attracted fans to their equally eccentric live show. The mind bending 'Panda' includes extended instrumentals and bizarre chattering through the lyrics which seemed to please fans who were looking for an alternative to the bland indie explosion of the times led by the likes of The Kooks and The Klaxons.
Now touring with a different frontman due to Smith wanting to start a family, Henry Tremain and co conduct a similarly unusual show mainly powered by their sophomore album '13.0.0.0.0' which although still links to the first, feels more personal to the remaining trio of musicians. The material is stronger live, from the disjointed 'Cat Fantastic' to the frenzied 'Left Aligned', the vocal is on point throughout and the music is going down really well Stateside as they merge newer tracks with the modern classics such as '26 is Still Dancier Than 4'.
