While YouTube has become one of the more frequent ways to get noticed in the music industry, Charice is one of the first to gain commercial exposure from it from being ‘discovered’ by Ellen Degeneres to being taken under the wing of famed producer and songwriter David Foster.
Since then, she’s released a number of albums including her self-titled record in 2010, which broke into the top 10 Billboard Albums chart, peaking at the eighth spot. She also gained more momentum when she was cast on a few episodes of ‘Glee,’ where she went toe-to-toe in a vocal battle with Lea Michele, who plays Rachel Berry, on Lady Gaga and Beyonce’s duet, ‘Telephone.’ However like many artists, Charice has gone through a number of changes, or rather, realizations. While many were introduced to her as the sweet girl-next-door via the Philippine Islands, her coming out as gay gave Charice the chance to change up her look quite significantly. Now she’s putting (or trying to at least) down Justin Timberlake-esque moves in dark skinny jeans and a sparkly blazer with a cropped fade to replace her long black hair. To be honest, her look didn’t initially sit well with a lot of the people in the audience when I saw her play the Theatre at Madison Square Garden.
Despite the fact that her very feminine Whitney Houston-like vocals and her more masculine appearance weren’t as well received, no one could deny Charice of her voice. The girl can clearly sing, especially when she covered ‘Titanium’ by David Guetta featuring Sia. Instead of just following Sia’s vocal progression on the high notes, Charice took it upon herself to surpass that and go even higher. So next time you catch Charice live, be prepared to be blown away by one grand voice.
