The band was formed by John Rzeznik on lead vocals and guitar, Robby Takac on the bass guitar and George Tutuska on the drums. The band took their name from a toy advert the band saw when they were preparing for a gig in the same evening, and to this day Rzeznik swears blind that if he had five more minutes then he would have picked a better name.
However, this was the late 80's leading into the early 90's. A banner time for bands with really stupid names. This was the age of Foo Fighters and and The Lemonheads, and the Goo Goo Dolls became one of the biggest names in American rock by their fifth album "A Boy Named Goo".
The album was the first on their indie label Metal Blade to go double platinum and suddenly, the band had the whole of the music world at their feet. And they were going to get even bigger.
Soon after, they were asked to write a song for the motion picture "City of Angels", and despite Rzeznik going through a serious period of writers block, the song he came up with was "Iris". A worldwide hit that's still on the radio to this day, this turned them into one of the biggest bands in the country.
They remain at this level to this day, their last four albums having debuted in the top ten and "Iris" is still a staple of radio playlists and American Idol auditions. They may not be the coolest band around but they remain at the top of their game, able to pull off a killer live show in front of any crowd they find themselves in front of. Highly recommended.

This was everything young teenager me could have ever wanted. They played a fantastic mix of new songs and old favorites (with good twists to keep the old songs new), and major props to the light and sound guys for helping out on a great show. The Goo Goo Dolls themselves were super energetic and still as vibrant as the first time I saw them perform (on tv. This was my first live show of theirs.) The band also shared a lot of interesting and hilarious anecdotes between songs, such as Johnny Rzeznik being told he was one woman's "freebie" and the first time he heard "Name" on the radio (in a supermarket). It was also cool to hear about their times playing in Atlanta before they were well-known. Another great aspect of this show in particular was the atmosphere. There was a great mix of young and old with no particular age group larger than the other. It led to a great feeling in the audience that we could all come together and enjoy the same music. All in all, it was a fantastic show and I can't wait for the next one!
The venue was nice, if you could ignore the sewer smell. Nasty. The opening bands weren't so good. They sounded like Goo Goo Dolls wanna-bees. In fact, I think they both played the same Goo Goo Dolls song, which is tacky and awkward. The Goo Goo Dolls were OK. Even their diehard fans seemed to be not that excited. Way too much time between bands, even though they didn't change much on the stage. All 3 bands made mistakes numerous times, including the Goo Goo Dolls, and they actually had to start some songs over because of mistakes. Most bands I see are flawless through their whole shows. I expected more, especially when it was their final show of their tour. They should've been tight. The back-up singer for Goo Goo Dolls needed to warm up before show, as he was sloppy and off key nearly the whole show. Bar bands do better. Just saying.
All around great show. The mix of music was a perfect blend of new and old. The energy of the performance was everything to would expect from the Goo Goo Dolls. You can tell they still have a passion for what they are doing and they are committed to bringing a memorable experience to their fans. I would catch every show for the rest of the tour if I could. Also worth noting is the opening set by Phillip Phillips. He was tremendous. Unfortunately the audience was really slow to warm up but it did not stop him from putting on a killer opening set. The night was a total hit.
Fantastic concert. There was a slight delay to the start time caused by the equipment not arriving on time. Some things are beyond control and the crowd was patient. Johnny and Rob put on a great show. This was my second Goo Goo Dolls concert. I was near the front row and could see every detail. Get to the show early so that you too can get up close. They played a few songs which had never been played live. As always there were a few stripped down acoustic versions played. Overall I’d relive that concert over and over again if I could.
I have seen the Goo Goo Dolls 4 times in the past year plus spent 3 days on a cruise ship to the Bahamas with them this past December. Every show has been different and their energy is awesome! They cover such a wide variety of songs from their albums that there is always something for everyone. I never miss a show when they come locally.
This past show had an awesome line up with Plain White T's and Daughtry. This tour just kicked off and if you have a chance to go see them, make sure you go!
The show was SPECTACULAR!!!! First of all Phillip Phillips and Band started this concert off with the most awesome surge of energy, that got everyone on their feet singing along and rocking along with him. Then what can you say just like all the way back in 85 The GOO GOO DOLLS came out and owned the stage!!! They performed like they were still in their twenties!! AWESOME job guys!! One of the best concerts that I have attended.
Just saw the Goo Goo Dolls Dizzy Up The Girl 20th Anniversary Tour performance at the beautiful historic State Theater in Minneapolis. Johnny was recovering from illness, said he was high on cough syrup, but still sounded great. It was a super concert! I will definitely be seeing them perform whenever they return to the area. 5 stars!!!!
I have seen the GooGoo Dolls many times. It seems to get better every time! This show in particular was the best! They do such a tremendous job with the song Come To Me. I couldn't think of a better way to propose to my soon to be wife, than during that song. She said "Yes!!" The crowd cheered! Best concert ever.
I had been waiting years for swing them life!!
Totally worth the wait!!
They played a mix of songs from all their albums, with special predominance from ‘Dizzy up the girl’, were the most famous songs are from.
