The group was formed in 2001 by Melbourne based DJ & Graphic Designer Dan Whitford who developed a love of dance music during his time at university. After purchasing a keyboard and sampler, Dan began experimenting with music, combining his love of more lo-fi sounds with dance influence creating something highly unique in the process. A home recorded demo tape landed him a deal with Australian label powerhouse ‘Modular Recordings’ setting on the name ‘Cut/Copy’ after a flash of computer based inspiration.
The band began to form as Dan added members and released a number of singles and the EP ‘I Thought of Numbers’ which was heavily remixed, further building the bands profile. The band’s first gig was in 2003 to the unusually large crowd of 5000 at livid festival which was unsurprisingly terrifying for the band.
The band’s first album ‘Bright Like Neon Love’ came in 2004 and spurred the band on as they began to tour internationally supporting acts like Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand. The freshly toured unit hit the studio with Tim Goldsworthy to record album number two, ‘In Ghost Colours’ which went straight in at number one in the charts when it was released in 2008.
The band released two more albums in the following years, ‘Zonoscope’ and ‘Free Your Mind’ and continued to play increasingly large shows and reach new crowds worldwide with their music being featured on TV and in Video games.

Cut Copy is by far my favourite band in the whole wide world. This is a big call. But every album is new and fresh, and what they do appears to have jumped out of nowhere, as well as emerged from a pretty well-documented modern obsession with the synthesiser at the same time. They crystallise and make better everything that was great about the 90s. Stick thin, in their button up shirts, soaked through with sweat within fifteen minutes, but they still manage to look dapper, these boys always give it 110%. I've seen them in New Zealand, Australia, the UK and cannot wait to see them a FIFTH time in France at Rock en Seine this summer.
The timeless "Lights & Music" and "Hearts on Fire" are almost always in the mix and have everyone jumping and singing together - Cut Copy really speaks to their audience.
For their last album I LOVE LOVE LOVE to hear "Corner of the Sky" and "Pharaohs & Pyramids" live!!!! I loved this new stuff with percussion and sounds of the (electronic) jungle, but before I could even tire of it the boys MADE ANOTHER ALBUM.
In typical Cut Copy style their video clips totally transform what you thought about the song and are completely unique in every way springing from parts of their subconscious which I would not dare to explore personally. Which is exactly what I love about the song "We are explorers." Few other bands make me feel free and push me to explore my mind. They are just on in the background whilst I'm at a party or running at the gym. Cut Copy I'm never just hearing but I am actively listening to.
I'll follow these boys all over the world to dance and jump and have enjoy that indescribable pleasure of seeing your favourite songs performed live with absolute enthusiasm by the creators of the music who clearly love what they do and have yet to run out of ideas. If you try any synth pop ever it should be them.
What a show! Australian electro band fronted by Dan Whitford have been working the circuit for over ten years and during their time they have developed a live show that is considered to be more of an experience than a simple gig. The sheer versatility of their music really helps with this ideal as the whole operation feels as though it twists, bends and adapts to the tracks that are playing.
The visuals are completely consuming as the audience watch in amazement as the stage really does feel like a living, moving entity. The lights flash and burn whilst the four musicians onstage concentrate within the chaos in order to create record perfect instrumentals during the likes of the ambient 'Out There on the Ice' and 'Hearts on Fire'. Despite the material from 'In Ghost Colours' being considered their most commercially successful, there is a balanced amount selected from the discography this evening. The strength of the overall show keeps the crowds equally enthused throughout as they have their hands in the air all evening to really make the most of the hedonistic experience. Cut Copy is without a doubt one of the most exciting Australian acts on the live circuit today.
Cut Copy live was like opening a door and stepping into the future. Well there literally was a giant door on stage and Cut Copy made their grand entrance by stepping through the door and into our hearts. IT WAS EPIC!!! This was on their 2010 tour and I have met several people over the years that have seen their show as well, we all agree this is one unforgettable performance. I remember my ex-girlfriend got so excited that she grabbed somebody’s butt, and it certainly was not mine. I was lucky enough to catch them again in 2013 and it was still the glorious dance party I remembered from years prior. This time I was at HARD Summer and it was a refreshing change to see a live band as opposed to just the typical DJ lineup. This was the highlight of the night and we were all the peak of our excitement. One of my friends was so excited that she kept reaffirming the fact that we need to see them, even though they were clearly already playing right before our very eyes. Cut Copy is one of those artists that gifts us with timeless albums and live shows that are hard to forget.
Saw Cut Copy at the Fox Oakland. A great venue for a great band, but it was not without technical difficulties. I arrived at 8:00 PM. A DJ was playing. At about 8:30 PM, the DJ went away to be replaced by a guy with a mix table. He played until about 9:00 PM, when the mix table was whisked away and the DJ reappeared for a while. The whole time, someone was going around checking on the mics, synths, guitars, etc., set up for the band. Cut Copy finally took the stage around 9:30 PM, about a half-hour late, but they were worth the wait! The band was in good form, Dan was in good voice, there was a nice blend of new and old music, a decent light show. They had me rocking out in my seat.
High energy show! Reminds me of a little of OMD and a little of Duran Duran, but they are much younger. Very talented as much of the band can play multiple instruments and all sing back-up vocals. They got the crowd into it, lots of dancing and a lot of fun. I want to see them again and again. BONUS: we were awarded VIP status in our email with no upgrade needed. I think because we were the first ones to buy tickets. :-)
Absolutely flawless set! Best show I've seen at Stubb's since Tycho.
Usually you can tell when bands are pandering to whichever city they're in, but I could tell they be genuinely meant the love they gave to Austin.
✌
They're bomb in live shows, also I got to meet them, they signed my shirt.
They are super nice and friendly!
Amazing experience!
I had a blast!
If you like their music you'll love their live shows for sure.
I love this band! And I’m really thrilled about them playing and singing live! They’re simply amazing! But I wish they had play at least two more songs but besid s that everything incredible!
Once again another amazing performance by Cut Copy! Dan was full of energey dancing and singing that superb voice of his. They played old and new tracks, a great mix, an awesome night!
Solid live show with great energy. They did a great job of mixing tracks from the new record and blended into their old hits. Crowd was enthusiastic from start to finish.
