The band allegedly caught their big break when Tyler Connolly (vocals/guitar) slipped the band’s demo to Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger, who had just stared 604 Records in 2001. Shortly after, the band, consisting of Tyler Connolly, Tim Hart, Dave Brenner, and Dean Back, were signed, and released their eponymous album in 2002. There was a bit of criticism found in the album, specifically that the band sounded like a carbon copy to their mentor’s band, however with touring and maturation, the band found their own sound. They turned their own sound into an album, entitled “Gasoline” in 2005, followed by a tour with Shinedown and No Address. Later that same year, the band went on a tour with Breaking Benjamin and The Exies. The following year, the band performed a cover version of “Deadly Game” as the theme song for the World Wrestling Entertainment’s No Way Out 2006.
In 2007 Robin Diaz took over as drummer and in 2008 the band released their third album, “Scars and Souveneirs.” By 2009 the album reached certified gold status, and had songs that appeared on various other media as well as tours. In 2011 the band released “The Truth Is…” followed by a co-headlined the Carnival of Madness Tour with After Bridge. Most recently, the band has released “Savages” on 29 July 2014.

Canadian rock band Theory of a Deadman were the first act to sign to 604 Records, Chad Kroeger from Nickelback’s record label. The affiliation with Kroeger allowed lead singer Tyler Connolly the opportunity to collaborate with him on numerous occasions. Releasing their debut self-titled album in 2002, the band went straight in at number 4 in the Canadian album charts. Connolly’s raspy and rough vocals give the band a country edge, a distinctive quality now synonymous with TOAD. The success of their debut scored them a Juno Award for New Group of the Year. In 2005 “Gasoline” their second album featured their first number one single “No Surprise”. Having toured with the likes of: Mötley Crüe, Black Stone Cherry, Stone Sour, Alter Bridge and Drowning Pool saw them perfect their performances whilst gaining in popularity with the crowds. Once the band hit the stage they are fully in the zone, met by a sea of screams. Dividing the crowd into male and female, Connolly calls for each to scream to see which side is louder before going into the track “Gentlemen”. The crowd go wild throwing their metal horns in the air as they raise their arms steadily fist-pumping as the red and blue lights dart across the stage. Occasionally Dave Brenner (guitar) and Dean Beck (bass) toss their plectrums into the audience as they scramble to make a catch. Slowing it down, Connolly dedicates “All Or Nothing” to the ladies of the crowd which is met with high pitched screams before the band let the crowd to sing the chorus acapella. Leaving “Bad Girlfriend” and “Lowlife” for the encore goes down a storm as Connolly roams to the front of the stage singing into the crowd as they sing it even louder back. One thing you can be sure of is that Theory of a Deadman know how to put on a blooming good rock show.
An excellent show! What can I say about Theory of a Deadman and Tyler Connolly? A great singer, songwriter, down to earth, friendly. I thoroughly enjoyed the concert last night at the Ogden. I ended up going alone as sometimes people get flakey. I still had a great time. I was amused at the drunks (male and female), amused until one woman fell over from dancing or the inebriated guy all over his woman. I just did my best to pretend I was the only one at the show and enjoyed the music. There was two songs I was not familiar with but I loved All or Nothing, Angel, Savages, and Santa Monica. Lowlife, Hate my life and Bad Girlfriend are okay but I admit the negativity gets old after a while. I loved the drummer's solo, what a great performance! It was amusing to see the amount of picks that were thrown into the audience too. This is the second show of Theory of a Deadman I have seen this year. They opened up for Bush back in February and I loved it then, was also a lot closer to the stage. I one day hope to meet Tyler, you never know. I once wanted to be a song-writer but I admit I worry about the starving artist situation... Great show and look forward to the next one!
Canadian hard rockers Theory of a Deadman have had a varied, successful career since their beginnings in the mid-00s. Having found success in the US and their homeland, in the UK they are a lesser known phenomena. Last year they were given the opportunity to support rock icons Black Stone Cherry and soon found themselves on some of the country's largest stages.
This opportunity can make or break an artist, some cripple under the sheer size of the room they are meant to entertain and leave the stage to heckles and boos. However Theory of a Deadman did not allow this fate to befall them and they successfully took the advantageous platform and made it their own.
Boldly stepping out to the Game of Thrones theme tune, the tone was set and they demonstrated their skill with a short, succinct set featuring hits including 'Bad Girlfriend' and 'Hate My Life' as well as airing some new material. Most importantly they proved to the british rock fans that they had been missing one of Canada's worst kept secrets.
Theory of a Deadman have been going strong since their formation in 2001, entertaining a whole legion of devoted and dedicated fans worldwide. The band is a rock and alternative metal band to their very core. They are powerful, heavy and energetic to the extreme, and the band members all seem to have been born with rock in their blood. It was quite something to see Theory of a Deadman perform live: I have never seen such an enthusiastic and passionate band before. A more heavy Nickelback, the band have gone form success to success in their career and a large part of this is because of the very real, very natural talent of every single band member. Tyler Connolly has an amazing voice, with his raspy and rough vocals giving the band a unique edge. The band played all their hits, opening with classic ‘No Surprise’, their number one hit single. This had the crowd roaring with appreciation and rocking out in excitement, singing along to every single word.
Went to Rebel on Thursday to see Theory of a Deadman and as every show of theirs it was amazing!!
The lead singer had hit his head earlier and joked about having a grandpa bandaid on his head but he did great, especially with the lights etc.
They sounded amazing as usual, they played so many of their best songs, my favourites and they did some playful stuff as well, Alice in Chains, Pantera, the other thing I can't remember but was awesome!!
I love this band so much, super love them more as they're Canadian and I will see them every chance I get.
They never have disappointed with their sound, stage presence or anything else.
I suggest everyone to go see them if possible.
I haven’t been to a really good concert in a long time and Theory of a Deadman went above and beyond awesome! I got lost in all of the songs. Choosing the song “Low Life” as the first one was brilliant! That kicked off a rockin’ party right there! The opening band Spirit Animal did an amazing job as well. I never knew about them until that night and I was shocked on how awesome they were. Spirit Animal is one of my favorites now. Being that Ace of Spades is a very small venue made the concert experience personable. I felt like I was in a music video. I was about 10 feet back from the stage. All in all, that night was amazing!
Had a GREAT time at The Ritz in Ybor City. Road my Harley parked on the sidewalk out of the path of people locked her to the light pole. Theory of a Deadman was awesome HOWEVER......
The staff went from I can't wear my bandana on my head to can't have the scarf around my neck to can't have it sticking out my back pocket 3 different people. Otherwise I had a GREAT time just wish Theory would have played NO SURPRISE the song which put them on the map..
Thank you I will return leaving bandanas on bike OH yeah I was not allowed to go out to put the three bandanas in the bike...jus saying
Saw their show in Milwaukee last night and they we're great live!!! Loved listening to all their biggest hits (Angel, Bad Girlfriend, Rx, Straight Jacket, Hurricane and more) and trying to catch guitar/bass picks from the band members (even though I can't catch at all). Some of their newer songs lean more towards pop than rock but if you like their music and the band, you won't be disappointed! Especially for such a great price! Just be sure to get there early if it's general admission and you want to be near the stage!
Very good in all aspects!
Very organized entry to begin with and then inside the space was quite good.
The opening band did not disappoint and warm up the crowd for the main act.
Theory of a deadman came with their usual awesome energy and the show itself was memorable.
They sang all their greatest hits and even a new song for their next album. This concert was my birthday present and I will not forget it. Was even better than the one they did last year in Koko because the sound quality was perfect.
Love these guys !! The show was GREAT. They played all songs that fans know and love. Did not dißsapoint.
The venue sucks though... horrible to try to see.. people pushing and fighting about spots with security not available. Some people spent the whole night going back and forth from the front to bar or bathroom they could have watched the show at all... why not just go to a bar since theyre only fans if themselves not the band
(Rant over)
Would love love love to see Theory again
