i have been wanting to attend a live performance of The Dresden Dolls ever since i was introduced to them 12 years ago, but alas we were never in the same city and they rarely had gigs in the last decade.
So when amanda announced the reunion on London for halloween i jumped on the opportunity to book tickets and flights, not knowing where i would stay, i just knew i had to.
My companion sadly had to work so i got stuck with an extra ticket that i could not sell since there was an extensive supply of tickets at the days before the event. So i ended up giving it away, and this live costing me approximately 250 euro (flights+concert tickets)
And it was worth it! what an amazing experience their live was! They command a room, they are Performers with capital P. They played a 3 hour set with discussions and anecdotes about the band, elections, neil gaiman :P
They played all my favorite songs: missed me (the first i ever heard), coin operated boy, girl anachronism they did covers of rage against the machine, oasis (impersonating them), hoosier, and others, nailing it every time they did 2 encores
They encouraged us to urge our american friends to vote
My main complaint was that while at first i was quite front it was so crowded i could not move my feet and had to move a little further in the back, where there was no visibility of the stage, and the public was SO talkative it competed the band!
Aside from those side notes i had an amazing time, i danced and sang and fulfilled a life long desire
The Dresden Dolls, a famous dark cabaret gothic duo, were wonderful musicians to behold in Portland, OR.
Whether they were tinkling away dark, mesmerizing tunes on the piano, or filling the stage with their vocals, both Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione were completely in sync with each other. While their sound and lyrics certainly have a dark, melancholic nature to them, their performance was style life-affirming for the sheer amount of passion on display on stage.
Singer Amanda Palmer has an incredible command of her voice and squeezed every possible emotive quality out of it while performing songs such as "Good Day" and "Boston." "Half Jack," especially, was an incredibly powerful performance, which elicited thunderous cheering and applause from the jumping crowd.
Even if there's a somber nature to their performances, the crowd certainly respects and appreciates their music and is there to support The Dresden Dolls, a band that is known for crafting its own unique sound which suits its purposes perfectly. Every note of their live performance exuded what The Dresden Dolls have always been looking to craft, and to experience it with an audience that was there to support and appreciate their darker music made the performance extra worthwhile.
A++
Amanda and Brian were absolutely amazing. PAR BTTM was fantastic. Everything you could expect from a 2 and a half hour Dresden Dolls show happened. Best show of the year
