Originally conceived of in 2006 when the members remained in high school, Miss May I, formed of Levi Benton on lead vocals, Justin Aufdemkampe on lead guitar, B.J. Stead on rhythm guitar, Ryan Neff on bass guitar and Jerod Boyd on drums, soon found a proclivity for highly technical, melodic induced metalcore.
The band’s debut 5-track EP titled “Vows for a Massacre” along with their 2008 follow-up “Demo 2008” were self-released, the latter of which featured the songs “Architect” and “Tides” which would appear on their first full length “Apologies Are for the Weak” released by Rise Records on June 23, 2009. After a number of years touring the band announced they were to return to the studio to work on their sophomore release.
Miss May I’s musical influences have been stated as Pantera, Deftness, Avenged Sevenfold, Thirty Seconds to Mars among many many others and the variety can be heard in their music. The heavy powerful and screamed elements, combining with the melodic and emotional act in unison in a very driven way.
The sophomore album titled “Monument” was produced by Joey Sturgis and released August 17, 2010. “Monuments” debuted at No. 76 on the Billboard chart, peaked at No. 10 on the Top Hard Rock Albums Chart and No. 15 on the Top Independent Chart. The band subsequently released a music video for the track “Relentless Chaos” directed by Thunder Down Country and appeared on the 2011 Warped Tour.
The band returned to the studio in early 2012 and released their third full-length “At Heart” slightly later than expected on June 12, 2012, after which the band set out on a U.S. tour with After the Burial and Whitechapel among others, and a European tour with Parkway Drive and The Ghost Inside. In 2013 Miss May I supported Bullet For My Valentine on their March 2013 tour in the UK alongside Halestorm.
2014’s “Rise of the Lion” was the band most commercial and critical success, reaching No. 21 in the Billboard 200 and No. 2 in the U.S. Hard Rock album chart. The lyrics to the album were return letters to fans that they were unable to return at the time, with the vocalist Levi Benton stating “it’s a very fan based record”.

I have been a fan of Miss May I since 2009. Ever since, they truly have been an inspiration and I don't know how to ever repay them.
Their lyrics have so much meaning behind them. Their concerts give off a good vibe. The members of the band themselves care about and love all of their fans. I am proud to say that they are in fact my role models. Their music has helped so much, and I know I'm not the only person who thinks that. Sadly, I've only seen them live once, but it was the best day of my life. Miss May I held a meet and greet, so of course I wanted to go. When it was my turn to meet them, I was speechless. The whole band was so kind hearted and were full of smiles. I asked Levi Benton (the lead singer) for a hug and he replied with "Sure, I love hugs." To this day, I still am sort of dazed. I still can't believe I met the whole band. During their set, it was just so much fun. Of course their was a mosh pit, people pushing each other, and crowd surfers, but that didn't matter at that moment. I was jumping up and down and singing along, and I honestly had a blast. During the set Levi stopped twice. The first time was to ask people to do a circle pit around a tree that was nearby. The second was just before they ended the set Levi started thanking everyone for coming, for all their support, and for just being fans. He then said how after the set he would dry off and would be meeting fans at the Miss May I's merch tent. By the time he said that I was in line for another meet and greet. I wanted to go meet Levi once again, but then again I wanted to meet this other band. I waited in the line for a couple more minutes and since no one was moving I left to the Miss May I's merch tent. When I got there, there was already a line. It wasn't to big, so I was okay with it. I stood in line and then saw this guy with a hat on walking towards the tent. He took off his hat and it was in fact Levi Benton. Since there was more people then he thought, he said that no one had to worry, that he would get to everyone no matter what. It took about five minutes until I got to him, and right away he recognized me, which made me even more happy. He signed my phone case, then I asked if I could take a picture with him. He said yes, so I did, then he asked if he could take one of us, of course I said yes. After all that I gave him a hug and he hugged back which made me feel all fuzzy inside. I was so happy.
Anyway, the reason why I told you my story is because it shows that the band really cares about their fans. They show it in their songs, at their shows, also in the way they treat their fans. Some bands even show that they could care less, but not Miss May I. They are just some of the sweetest people you'll ever meet. I can't wait to see them live again, and for anyone who hasn't seen them, don't get scared because of your surroundings, get lost in the music and enjoy it.
Ohio melodic metal core outfit Miss May I are injecting some glam into their brand of metal, something that has been missing from recent contemporaries. It is worth noting that for a band who only identified themselves in 2007, them seem to have a clear vision for where they want the project to go. The line-up has remained almost entirely in tact and this lends itself to great consistency and good vibes onstage as these guys have been through the touring and recording processes together.
Impressively they have already clocked up over 300 shows in a short amount of time. Their energy and aggression is exemplary for any metal band yet the melodic and anthemic choruses means the crowd goes from moshing to bellowing together arm in arm in a matter of minutes. Although they may be a cult taste for now, this band really do seem to have all the components to really go the distance and with their growing commerciality in the States, it is only a matter of time before the UK markets follow suit.
I didn't go, because of the Seine overflowing the gigs was set in another place : Le Glazart.
This place is shit and has spoil already to many great bands for me. So I'll never set foot there again ... even if that make me miss my favorite bands.
I'll see Miss May I another time.
Amazing concert. 4 bands that played awesone music. I really liked the organization and the setlist of the bands. I will definitely go again. Miss May I and Fit For a King were awesome and it was my first time at their concert so I was not disappointed.
