The Barnsley band were formed by Biff Byford on vocals and Paul Quinn on guitar who have both remained constants within the band’s morphing line up over the years. After a brief stint under the name ‘Son Of a Bitch’, they adopted ‘Saxon’ as their moniker and began to build a following as they toured the UK in support of larger acts like Motorhead.
The band’s second album ‘Wheels Of Steel’ was when they first showed the potential they had as it hit number 5 in the album charts. Successful singles like ‘747’ and ‘Wheels of Steel’ were popular enough for the band to make the first on many appearances on popular UK chart show ‘Top of The Pops’.
From then on Saxon experienced nothing but success for the remainder of the decade with 8 top 40 albums including what many fans consider the band’s best work ‘Strong Arm of The Law’. They toured the world and played huge festival slots at the likes of ‘Monsters of Rock’ and when their popularity was at a peak they signed a deal with EMI records.
The label expected the band to match their European successes in the US but when this failed to manifest the band were dropped from EMI. This wasn’t going to stop them though as decades later, the band still tour and release albums. Their long career has earned them the respect of the metal community and a dedicated fanbase who continue to enjoy watching the band play at places like Download Festival.

Saxon have been a band for many years now, gracing the heavy metal scene in the U.K with the huge metal sounds. They have gain some pretty impressive accolades over time making 8 UK Top 40 albums in the 80’s including four UK Top 10 albums and two Top 5 albums. They also managed to have numerous singles in the UK Singles Chart and chart success on the whole continent! Tonight’s audience are hungry for metal, the bars are lined with the hordes or metalheads who you can tell have been with Saxon from the beginning, some are sporting the tour t shirts from 20 years ago too. They open with the riff heavy Crusader which puts this audience in the right frame of mind for this ruckus of a performance, which has the crowd just erupting. “Metalhead” is a worthy sophomore song, that keeps the party going, and then they finish on the epic “Lionheart” which has the audience astounded at the amazing musicality of this band.
Great Concert. Seen them last year in a smaller venue down in Iowa. Saxon has always been a top 5 bands for myself. Biff sounded great. He's getting older, but his voice is still the same. The rest of the band were perfect. I love watching Nibbs on the bass, hair-wiping around. Paul and Doug on guitars were spot-on. On the drums Nigil is very under-rated, great drummer. The new venue in town, the ARMORY was awesome. Me and my group of friends had a great time. Can't wait to see them again :)
Wild Bill
I have seen Saxon 3 times in the 80's and my son bought me a ticket for xmas. I didn't know if they still had what it takes to deliver a good show . I was pleasantly surprised as they were better than good, they put on an excellent show and I will definately be looking out for them later in the show. A mix of new and old classics rocked the night from start to finish . Brilliant night.

You guys gave me a bad joke...you've put the name and the photo of the legendary metal band called Saxon, but they were not them playing at the gig, but a reggae artist that calls himself Saxon Sound System..I spent 30 quids for absolutely nothing.thank you very much guys
Awesome band to watch, they haven't changed a bit and sound exactly the same even better than an album. Highly Recommended. The energy from them is Amazing! The Vocals are out of this world!! I wished the night didn't end. British Metal is the best out there.
Saxon was absolutely brilliant and the Barrowlands was bouncing and they blow the roof off the crowd was amazing the support bands were fantastic aswell can't wait to see them next year for their 40th anniversary
Biff and the boys never disappoint. Sat in the VIP section and it was worth every penny. After all these years they still sound great. Looking forward to seeing them again later in the year.
Dispite the weather in San Antonio and the problems that it created it was a great show last night ! Saxon still knows how to rock !! Can't wait for the new album and the tours that follow !!
Saxon were great and on top form.
100mph a full musical treat, Biff really stoked up the crowd and the Roundhouse is a perfect venue for them.
